Wifi link speed

2011-02-09, 17:33 PM

Hello,

I have an X200 laptop, and I'm making voip calls.

Sometimes I have a very bad conversation quality, even that I'm connected to the WIFI with 5 bars and there is a very good internet bandwidth.

The strange thing is that when the link speed is constant (for example 2 Mbps or 54Mbps), the conversatin quality is very good. But when it changes on the scale from 1mbps to 54mbps every 5 seconds, the call quality is poor.

It happens at my house and also in cafes.

Why does the link speed changes when I have 5 bars?

Is it possible to solve it?

Thank you very much,

I'll be glad if someone can help me, because I'm talking over my SIP application every day and I wish that the call quality will always be good.

Mark.

Basically you may have a strong signal indication, but there may be a lot of contention for the use of the radio band that the signal is in.

WiFi uses a shared medium.  Achieveable data throughput will vary with the number of other users concurrently accessing any access point in the vicinity, and will also vary if there are other devices want to use the Wi Fi channel space.  WiFi operates on what is effectively unlicenced wireless spectrum, so you can be contending with a range of other non-WiFi devices in the same wireless spectrum.

Cheers,

Bill

Hello,

Thanks for the quick answer.

I understand that the speed may change because of other equipment in the sorrounding.

But I guess that voip packets are dropped (udp) everytime that link speed changes.

Is it possible to set the wifi driver to work with a constant speed?

For exmaple to work only on 1Mbps. In this case, I hope that my conversation quality will remain good.

I looked in the driver properties, and couldn't find this feature.

Thanks,

Mark.
