Win7 x230 2306CTO audio issues

2012-08-31, 4:07 AM

From what I can tell, after a cold boot, one application can produce audio, but when I switch to another application, it is not able to produce audio.  For example, after i log in, I can go to the sounds control panel applet, click on the slider and get audio successfully, but when I close the applet and open it or any other application, it is not able to produce audio.

I've tried to reinstall the driver, but this did not make a difference.  I have the Lenovo System Update app installed, so I'm pretty sure I have the latest driver installed.

Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

'evening.

double-check the driver matrix here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT073834

to be sure you got the most recent from TVSU, which can sometimes lag behind the matrix a bit.

cheers.

Thanks. There was a new RealTek driver available, but after I installed it, I get an error from Dolby Advanced Audio saying there is now a version mismatch between it and the audio driver, I think.

Hi, I'm seeing the same problem on my x230; I have downloaded the newest Realtek drivers (6647), however I experience problems frequently when switching between applications, and sometimes web-based sounds don't work either (codecs are all up to date, I've seen problems across various codec platforms, including Flash and Silverlight). Usually a reboot will fix the problem, but it is becoming quite the headache.

I have noticed if I disable or uninstall the Dolby software, the problems are fixed, but I really enjoy the higher quality of the Dolby effects, can someone help?

Hello,

We were (are) having the audio issues.  One user reported that his sound (both microphone and speakers) were working fine and then the next thing he knows, they aren't working.

Rebooting worked for him but of course that's not a real solution.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled the audio drivers but just read this thread.

We had another user with an X230 and Windows 7 and the microphone wasn't working at all.  After I read this thread I uninstalled the Dolby Advanced Audio software and the microphone works now!

So thanks to LHCam for the suggestion/post!

Now I'm hoping we can an actual solution from Lenovo.

Actually just working on a new x230 laptop (with Win. 7 pro. 32 bit) and audio works fine; I've uninstalled the Dolby software but when I un-dock it and re-dock it, no more audio.

Exactly same issue here. I already reported it in another thread. I was trying to avoid calling tech support, but this is unacceptable. I have a corporate computer, and they wanted to give me the professional hp (I forget the model), but I insisted on having the x230 because it's supposed to be the non plus ultra of laptops. I am happy with the machine otherwise, but having unpredictable sound problems is just killing me, because I give a presentation of some sort almost every day of the week.

I never thought I would say this, because I still have 2 other thinkpads that work fine (X61 and T60), but the idea of going Mac has been lurking in the back of my head for a while.

Hi all,

Thanks for posting. Was reading through this thread and am really to hear about the issues you're facing.

I had more or less of a similar issue with the edge machine in regards to the audio. I don't have the X230 but maybe this might work. I would suggest you to uninstall the dolby and realtek drivers you have installed and once uninstalled reboot the machine. Let the windows install the drivers and check for the changes. Once done proceed to install the drivers from the support site and see if any chanes then.

Do let me know of the results and in the mean time i'll check for more updates.

Regards

Re: Win7 x230 2306CTO audio issues

Well, I've un-installed all audio drivers; rebooted and installed the latest audio drivers from Lenovo's site.  At first it seemed like all was well but again, the easiest way for me to get the audio to "disappear" is by undocking and docking.

A few undocks seemed to go fine with still having audio with no issues.  I then docked the laptop for the final time, I thought, and then did a Start > Undock and as soon as I saw the "undock complete" message from Windows, I undocked laptop and bam!  no more audio :(  It disappears from the Device Manager completely.

I then rebooted the laptop and was going to test different ways of undocking the laptop; thinking that maybe only the Start > Undock would cause the no audio issue.  Laptop came back up from reboot; logged in, and just undocked the laptop manually (no buttons pushed and no Start > Undock).  Audio still works.

I then hit the undock button that's on the docking station itself.  Sure enough; no more audio...so it wasn't limited to Start > Undock.

Reboot fixes things of course but I need a fix as soon as possible.  This is affecting at least 3 people in our company at the moment.

Any other thoughts?

EDIT:

My X230 laptops are Type # 2320s.

Just fyi; I've sent one of the x230 laptops back to Lenovo for repair last week.  Received it back; they replaced the motherboard and speakers supposedly and received it back.

Tested it out and for 20 times the sound worked perfectly after undocking and redocking.  However on the 21st undock and redock, the sound died again.

I've tried the laptop on a different docking station and the audio dies there too.

I reloaded the OS on the laptop and tried again, still audio issues.  Updated drivers and everything.

Looks like we'll be going to Dell laptops...

edit:

Oh and found a 4th laptop with the audio issue today.... :(
