Windows 10 Start Menu Won't Save/Personalize

2017-09-26, 2:07 AM

Hi, I have a brand new X1 Carbon and it's literally out of the box. Playing around with it and personalizing/making changes to my liking, and noticed something right away -- any changes I am making to the Windows 10 start menu with the tiles do not "save", and the tiles revert to what it was previously even after deleting/removing them, adding other tiles and moving them around.

When I'm in the settings area of personalization and selecting the "choose which folders appear on Start" option -- and toggle "on" a few of the folders, they do not save...and nothing happens.

Any changes I make to the start menu does not appear on the "preview", and does not save at all.

I assume this is a Windows issue; and I have tried to find a solution online; but have not found anything.  Since the machine is literally right out of the box; was hoping Lenovo can assist ...

Hi esun15,

Welcome to the forums.

I do not work for Lenovo. This is a peer to peer forum provided by Lenovo so that members can share their experiences and help each other. I am a customer like you and a volunteer on the forum. The Lenovo presence here deals with some of the broader issues, but unfortunately because of the number of queries there is no guarantee you will receive a direct response from Lenovo.

A couple of things to try:
1. Your anti-virius may be blocking changes as a way of preventing malware from changing your Start menu.
Try going off line and disabling your anti-virus before making changes, or try in Safe Mode.
2. If you have Windows 10 Pro, check the Group Policy Editor as described here.

Regarding the tiles not being shown correctly after making changes, there seems to have been a bug in the Creators Update where it does not ask for the timezone, and when changed after installation, will not show the tiles properly until the change in the UTC offset in hours had passed, thus in a few hours that issue may pass.

Regarding the "choose which folders appear on Start" issue, the folders toggled do not appear as tiles, but rather as small icons on the far left of the Start Screen beneath the three horizontal bars.

BTW  Nothing will change in the Preview other than the Background and Colors.

Good Luck,

esun15, exactly which version of Windows 10 is installed? If Windows is updated (as well as Lenovo drivers) the bug in Creators update should not be a problem.

Re: Windows 10 Start Menu Won't Save/Personalize

I just received my X1 Yoga 2nd gen today. I'm having the same problem that any customization to the start menu layout is lost after restart or simply after awhile.

I have all updates installed and I don't use any anti-virus besides window's own defender.

I'm having Windows 10 Pro version.

Please help. Thanks!

My sister's G50-80 came back from the lab after they installed a new motherboard and hardisk. Now she has the same problem - I switch the toggle to "show File explorer" and not only the icon doesn't show in the start menu, when I go back out and go back in again - it's like I did nothing.

I'm thinking about reinstalling her windows, but I have to wait for the weekend before I'll have time to deal with it.

Forgot to add that I updated her windows to version 1709.

I had the same issue as stated in this thread with the start menu not being able to be personalized at all. I finally reset the PC back to factory settings. After about 30 minutes, I restarted my customization and everything was working at that point. I've no idea what happened originally, but given that others have a similar issue, I suspect the Lenovo customization has somehow created the behavior. The issue has not reoccurred and all has been well since the PC reset.

After following all the other advice I was about desperate enough to do the factory reset as suggested above, but I came across this solution on superuser and it did the job!

"Try renaming the Registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CloudStore to something else, for example CloudStore.bak. Afterwards, log out and log in again. The key will be regenerated, and you will lose some settings (night light, personalizations in the Settings app) along with your Start menu layout."

Had this same problem on a brand new L380 Yoga, the regedit worked perfectly!
