Windows 10 version 2004 update on X1 Carbon (5th gen)

2020-10-07, 18:51 PM

According to this from Lenovo, my Thinkpad X1 Carbon (5th gen) laptop has been tested and is compatible with the Windows 10 version 2004 update.

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/HT510448-LENOVO-DEVICES-TESTED-FOR-WINDOWS-10-VERSION-2004-MAY-2020

However when I go to Windows update, it tells me that version 2004 is "on its way" but not available yet.  The "Learn more" link tells me that Windows is holding the update because the Conexant audio drivers need to be updated (I verified my device does have audio by Conexant).

If I go to the Lenovo support site to submit a ticket to talk to someone to try and resolve the contradiction, I am told my laptop is know out of warranty (just slightly past the 1 year mark) and that I have to agree to be billed to get support on this.  And the e-Ticket support portal is the jankiest thing I've seen in years.  It looks like a site from 1997.

Is this really how Lenovo does business?  Thinkpad used to be a great brand.  Apparently now not so much...

Check the drivers page of your laptop. Chances are newer drivers have been released

Ha!  I wish....  Most recent drivers for my laptop are from Sept 2020.  Version 8.66.89.51.  These are already installed and declared by Microsoft to be incompatible.

This is a widespread problem for owners of devices with the Conexant audio device.

I took a quick look at this. If Microsoft's AI is not offering up the upgrade to you yet you can always do it manually using the Windows 10 Update Assistant. The Conexant driver is newer than any version cited by Microsoft so I wouldn't worry about that. Of course now the latest Windows 10 version is 20H2 :-).
USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!
