Windows Update just installed 'Lenovo - Extension - 1.0.0.0' - but what is it?

2020-12-17, 7:15 AM

I just came back from a  meeting to find that Windows Update had installed a driver "Lenovo - Extension - 1.0.0.0". Does anyone know what this is?

Thanks very much

A good guess @koyite847 but I don't think so. Here's my rationale - the source you linked to noted that V 1.0.0.0 was released April 11 2019. Also the name of my installation 'Extension' does not match the name 'Firmware'. Lastly, my Thinkpad is an X1 Extreme (something I should have mentioned in my original post - my apologies) for which the package you point to does not match.

A couple of additional questions would follow:

Firmware is an ambiguous term; firmware for what I wonder?

Why is 'firmware' being distributed by Windows Update and not via Lenovo Vantage?

Today I have the same "Extension" downloaded into my computer without asking. X1 Extreme Gen2.

Lenovo - Extension - 1.0.0.0 in Windows 10 Update?

2020-12-18, 11:46 AM

What is this that suddenly just tried to install on my X1 Carbon (7th Gen) via the Windows 10 update???? Seems to be a forced install with no details as to what it is or what is or what it does.

Same question here - what is it!

On December 19, 2020 Windows asked me to restart because it has installed "Lenovo - Extension - 1.0.0.0". My computer is Lenovo ThinkPad T580. Windows version is Windows 10 Pro, version 20H2, build 19042.685

Here's what showed up in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\ today:

disk.inf_amd64_db3741ba06349d65

lenovodiskextnpackage.inf_amd64_7f8da31d94f94432

So somethings disk related, disk.inf looks something USB-disk related, the lenovodiskextnpackage looks like additional Samsung M2 ssd disk drivers., so nothing fancy new...

What I found out so far is that the optional Windows updates called something like "Lenovo Ltd. - Firmware - 1.0.0.16" are actually UEFI/BIOS updates - just distributed via Windows Update and not via Lenovo channels. So the "Extension" updates are most likely a different thing.

Yes, I see the same on my ThinkPad T490s.

First, it updated "something" for my Samsung M.2 SSD MZVLB512HBJQ-000L7 (should also happen for MZVLB256HBHQ-000L7, MZVLB1T0HBLR-000L7, and MZVLB2T0HALB-000L7 according to the .inf file).

Then, about 1h later the folder C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\storfwupdatesamsung.inf_amd64_f03a424d8bdad1a1 was created and it seems the firmware of my Samsung M.2 SSD has been updated to version 4M2QEXF7.

My guess is that both updates are related...

In general, I'm very happy to get updates. But I really don't like if it happens in such a non-transparent way. The names on the rather new "Optional Windows Updates" page are really terrible!

Thanks @ danevald for the pointer!
