Windows XP - User Interface Failure "vrlogon.dll" Failed to Load

1/ Symptom

X60 running XP SP 2

Fingerprint readrer malfuntioning

2/ Action

Downloaded fresh copy Fingerprint Reader from Lenovo downloads web site

Per instructions - first removed old F-RDR copy using CP -> Windows Add/Remove Programs

3/ Result

Now X60 will not complete Windows boot up - will not get to "Logon to Windows" screen - seems Fingerprint Reader did not remove its .dll's correctly - left a call to this .dll [which is no longer in system]

Therefore I can only start Windows [i.e. get to Windows Logon screen] in Safe Mode, NOT Safe Mode with Networking.

However Safe Mode does not allow installation of new programs [i.e. my new clean copy of Fingerprint Reader]

If you Google 'vrlogon.dll' seems other Lenovo users have a similar probram with Fingerprint Reader

My X60 therefore unusable

What is the resolution ??

thanks

ds

Re: X60 Fingerprint Reader - cannot Log On to Windows XP "vrlogon.dll" missing

Do a System Restore from safe mode? That will get your computer running again. Then research the problem some more, or maybe someone with experience of this will chime in?

Re: X60 Fingerprint Reader - cannot Log On to Windows XP "vrlogon.dll" missing

dseaborn, welcome to the forum,

use msconfig in safe mode to disable CSSAUTH.EXE at start up, that should hopefully enable you to boot into Windows normally.

Re: X60 Fingerprint Reader - cannot Log On to Windows XP "vrlogon.dll" missing

Thank you but I do not want to restore as:

1/ it will take a day's downloads and work to get Windows XP from April 2006 factory state version to current

 SP2 build 2006

2/ I would have to re-install all my programs [10+], my preferences and my data files - another full days work.

??? Anyone know how to remove a leftover residual call vrlogon.dll? My next action is to try to use a 'registry cleaner' to remove the call. This .dll is Fingerpritn reader code not windows code. vrlogon.dll does not exiot in normakl windows XP systems.

IBM/LENEVO WHERE IS YOUR SUPPORT --

This is an error in Fingerprint reader -- not cleaning up after itself after 'Remove Programs'

Your last response did not report on the results of trying AndyP's suggestion. Please let us know what happens. Regedit (a Windows program) is the next step up from MsConfig. Are you comfortable using Regedit?

Re: X60 Fingerprint Reader - cannot Log On to Windows XP "vrlogon.dll" missing

Hello, Thank you.

I just tried AndyPs suggestion - I started MSConfig in Safe Mode and searched all 6 tabs carefully but could not find the  program CSSAUTH.EXE to disable.

Might it go by another name?

I have not used Regedit but am willing to try....carefully ;<))

thansk you AndyP and Witling

Re: X60 Fingerprint Reader - cannot Log On to Windows XP "vrlogon.dll" missing

You could use the wonderfull Autoruns tool from Sysinternals. Look for CSSAUTH.EXE in the LogOn menu and disable it.

Please be carefull using this tool, doing the wrong thing can be regretable.

Re: X60 Fingerprint Reader - cannot Log On to Windows XP "vrlogon.dll" missing

OK, CSSAUTH.EXE is part of your jen-u-wine Lenovo Thinkvantage package. "CSS" stands for "Client Security Services." Malware of various kinds sometimes labels itself as CSSAUTH.EXE. See

http://www.file.net/process/cssauth.exe.html

This program should live in C:\Program Files. If it lives in C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 then you've probably got malware.

Try the following in 1, 2 order.

1.  Open MsConfig using your Start>Run function in XP. Under the Startup programs tab turn off anything that looks vaguely like Lenovo security. Restart the computer. If your problem has gone away you might want to let the startup programs that you shut off come back up one at a time. This is done by giving one program permission to start and then rebooting. It's a slow process.

2.  If # 1 didn't work, let's try Regedit.  Regedit is the functional equivalent of adjusting your television with a mallet. Start Regedit by going to Start>Run and typing regedit . I'd start by going to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

CSSAUTH.EXE should live there. Take it out of the running by changing the path name to something incorrect. I'd recommend a change rather than removal because you may want to restore it. I typically would rename the program to something like XXXCSSAUTH.EXE. A unique change makes it easier to find these things if you need to. By the way, bookmark the location of CSSAUTH.EXE while you're in regedit. That's the easy way to get back there if you have to.

Sorry I can't give you any first person adice about this but I haven't bought my Lenovo yet.

Re: X60 Fingerprint Reader - cannot Log On to Windows XP "vrlogon.dll" missing

Thank you for the suggestions.

1/ Last night I used msconfig and turned off everything that vaguely looked like it came from IBM/Lenovo. No luck - unfortunately the "User Interface Error  "vrlogon.dll failed to load" error is still there, preventing me from logging on to my Thinkpad [except in Safe Mode].

2/ I will try the regedit route today.

If only I could reinstall my fresh copy of 'Fingerprint Reader' in Windows Safe Mode, I think the problem would be solved...[?]

Re: X60 Fingerprint Reader - cannot Log On to Windows XP "vrlogon.dll" missing

Doh! If you can't use System Restore, I found two solutions which appear to have helped others with the same error (haven't tried them, no guarantees):

* Toggle "Change the way users log on or off" from Safe Mode" to "Users fast switching".

* Use this "Fix Win XP Logon" utility from Doug Knox.
