X1 6 gen HDR - Is the panel 8 bit (reported by EDID) or 12 bit (required by Dolby Vision)?

2018-04-26, 7:55 AM

I recently received my X1 Carbon with HDR screen, panel model B140QAN02.0

According to the EDID information reported by the panel, it uses 8-bit color depth, but to be Dolby Vision compliant as advertised, it should be 12.

EDID information (empasis mine):

Manufacturer: AUO Model 2036 Serial Number 0
Made week 0 of 2017
EDID version: 1.4
Digital display
**** 8 bits per primary color channel ****
DisplayPort interface
Maximum image size: 31 cm x 17 cm
Gamma: 2.20
Supported color formats: RGB 4:4:4
First detailed timing is preferred timing
Established timings supported:
Standard timings supported:
Detailed mode: Clock 245.500 MHz, 309 mm x 174 mm
               2560 2608 2640 2720 hborder 0
               1440 1443 1448 1504 vborder 0
               -hsync -vsync
Manufacturer-specified data, tag 15
ASCII string: AUO
ASCII string: B140QAN02.0

Can you confirm whether is the panel really HDR or not?

Could the panel be reporting a wrong value?

Windows has never indicated that the display is HDR capable. The new Spring update doesn't change that and Lenovo support has never chimed in to provide any explanation. Many of us bought the display on the promise that it was HDR/Dolby Vision compatible, and are out of the return period now that the promised Windows update that was supposed to provide it is here. If it keeps up you can imagine something happening that rhymes with xxxxxx

I am not too concerned about the fancy HDR although it should be 'as advertised'. In europe this can be a reason to return a product, if it is the main purpose for the purchase and is preventing you to use the product for your needs.

If i simply have no hardware/software issues it would be good enough for me :) . So far this is not the case

the latest INF update for X1C6 seems to enable this. Can you try it?

Installed it. Still shows as SDR, dxdiag still says it's not HDR capable. It's unclear what enabling Dolby Vision means in this context, but...no changes that I can see.

I think Lenovo needs to explain what is going on here. I bought this laptop and paid for the Dolby Vision screen but even with the latest GPU drivers and monitor INF no software actually sees it as a Dolby Vision HDR screen. What is going on? Is it a true Dolby Vision display or is it just a 500nits panel? the EDID suggests it is not a Dolby Vision screen. If so how does Lenovo legally sell it as Dolby Vision??

It is not legal for sure to sell product through false advertising and descriptions

Guys, please remember 1 thing. The specs (nits, bits, etc.) to qualify as HDR 10 or Dolby Vision only applies to TVs and Computer Monitors. Mobile devices don't have to comply with those specs!!!

The iPhone X has HDR 10 and Dolby Vision with an 8 bit panel....
