Re:X1 6th Gen. fingerprint reader not working, 4th repair in 2 weeks

2021-05-11, 16:23 PM

Okay, thank you very much! When I receive the device I will check if it works, and contact support again. I dont want refurbished parts, especially the motherboard... Warranty are only 10 months left, and I expect the device to last a long time.I will let you know, when I have new information :)

BTW. Is there a way to check if a part is refurbished or new?
Would like to know if the replaced Keyboard and Touchpad are also refurbished…

Hopefully it will be fixed once and for all so that you can fully enjoy your X1 Carbon 6th gen. machine.

For replacement parts, we don't have a way to determine if it's refurbished or new. Perhaps you may try asking the tech support about it.

Stay safe

As I said:

Repaired motherboard = Refurbished motherboard.

Always.

You can read about this in Reddit forums, my tech also told me so and this is also my personal experience (10+ years of ThinkPads).

I went throught "TB3 error" service hell on my X1Y3. I did not accept a refurbished mainboard because of the failing TB3 ports (these have to be flashed immediately with new fw to avoid fw degredation over time). On refurbished it's like a lottery. Inacceptable on my 24/7 machine.

Good luck!

Re:X1 6th Gen. fingerprint reader not working, 4th repair in 2 weeks

I finally received my device today. According to the documentation Flex changed the motherboard and reinstalled Windows.

But now I have trouble in the Win 10 setup. There is a prompt to enter UIPath credentials. I don’t know what that is…

There is now way to skip this step.

Now I can’t even setup Windows.

After 10 tries to skip UIpath I reinstalled Windows using the Lenovo recovery.
Still same problem….

I have to wait till Monday to be able to contact Lenovo support, maybe you guy’s are faster and can help me out again.

Thanks!

Looks like Flex did a corporation image, so you should avoid using installed recovery, download a retail win10:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

and install, the Volume license is at bios so it can be auto activated.   And then install lenovo software if you want to.

Thanks for your reply. I won’t do that. I did this some time ago and it created other problems (driver issues, battery and power management issues). Lenovo recommend me to install Windows with the recovery tool. In addition to that I don’t am not able to create a bootable USB right now. I only have an iPad and a Mac. I tried to create a bootable USB on the Mac with balenaEtcher, it didn’t work. I know how to do that kind of stuff. I did it all the time on my ThinkPad. To be honest I think it’s not my responsibility or duty to do all these workarounds. It should just work, especially after all these problems.

You came here to seek a solution, not to finger point who is the bad guy. There is no jury here to determine who is responsible for your laptop.

Lenovo image = Original Win10 + Lenovo Vantage

Sure! I know what you mean, but in my opinion Lenovo is responsible to deliver a working device, especially if its under warranty. It’s not my fault that they can’t figure out how to repair the fp reader ( I dont know if it repaired now) and install the wrong image. In my experience the Lenovo Image is more than Win 10 + Vantage. There is other software included (that’s why I had problems some time ago using “regular” win 10 iso). As a customer I shouldn’t have to deal with that.

Quick update. According to Support the problem is the motherboard.

"When a device gets its system board replaced, the hardware hash should be de-registered. If it’s not de-registered autopilot automatically registers the device with the previous brand data. The customer usually notices the issue after (re)installing the OS."

A technician will try to fix it on site.

Edit: The technician was not able to fix it on site. He took some pictures of the motherboard and send them to Lenovo. When he worked on the computer and checked WIN setup the screen started flickering and after the device restarted the WIN setup was stuck. He called back to his office and suggest a motherboard swap again...
