X1 Carbon 2015 won't wake from sleep

2015-05-01, 20:20 PM

I manually put the system to sleep via the Start menu (or whatever it's called now).  Usually, when I come back and hit the power button, it resumes just fine.  But it seems that every now and then, it gets totally stuck.  The green light on the power button is blinking slowly, but the machine won't respond at all.  I press the power button, press the enter button, do everything I can think of, but it stays off.  This happens on battery and on AC.  It's not easily reproducible; it's done it maybe two or three times in the past week that I've had it.  I'm looking for some pattern but haven't found it.

The only resolution I've found is to hold down the power button until I get full power off.  Then I can boot from scratch, losing anything I had open at the time of the sleep.  Any ideas?

I've had this too...seems to me to be a Windows 8.1 issue.  Frustrating, especially coming from a MacBook Air which is pretty flawless in the reliability, dependability and battery life department.

So, it's happened about five times so far, and twice today.  I think I may be focusing in on a pattern, but I need more data.  It seems that if the computer is plugged into AC power and I just close the top (i.e., I don't manually put it to sleep, though this is the part I need to investigate more), then it goes to sleep and will not wake up.  The green light on the power button (and the red light on the outside) blinks slowly.  I think if I put it to sleep myself, then the green light is off, and when I pretty the button, it powers back on and wakes just fine.

Bottom line is that I still have the problem and it's getting more annoying.

I've tried a suggestion I found elsewhere:  to uninstall the Intel HD Graphics 5500 display driver and then download and reinstall the latest such driver from Intel.com.  Their automated driver update utility didn't do the trick (i.e., it didn't look specifically for display drivers), so I had to search for it manually on their site.  But find it I did, and I'll see if this does the trick.  Crossing fingers...

Didn't work. I uninstalled the display driver, rebooted the computer, downloaded a new driver from intel.com and installed that. And today, when I went to turn on my machine, it was still stuck in the slow-flashing-light sleep state.

I need to keep better track of the data to try and pinpoint the pattern for reproducing this. I think last night, it was on battery power, I put it to sleep, and then I plugged it in. When I tried to turn it on this morning, it was on battery power (but should have been fully charged). So I'll start keeping track of that.

Same issue here with my new 1 week old X1 Carbon.  It has happened twice, both times plugged into the One Dock and fully charged.  Both times went to sleep after not in use for the predetermined amount of time.

So far I like the design and the functionality of the X1 Carbon (I wish Windows 8 handled DPI better) but if I can't get this fixed I will need to go back to my T440s with the USB dock.

Hi FrankOwen,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Did you check with updating the docking station firmware, you can check the firmware from the below link and download firmware for respected model.

Firmware is up to date (same version that is listed on http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd029981) the strange thing is my driver version is newer then the one on that page, it came down through System Update.

I don't think it is a dock issue as other people have reported the same issue without the dock.

Curiously, the problem seems to have been resolved, but I don't know what fixed it.  I was keeping good logs for a while, hoping to spot some pattern.  But 5/16 was the last day that it failed to wake from sleep mode, and I stopped keeping logs in 5/23 and haven't had the problem since.  Maybe the update to the display driver worked after all.  I wish I could give a better tip to others experiencing the same issue.  I do not use a dock, so I doubt that had anything to do with it.  But all's well that ends well IMO.
