Re: X1 Carbon 2015 won't wake from sleep

2016-03-06, 9:23 AM

My thinkpad x1 carbon (upgraded from Win7 to Win10) continues to have the same problem even after installing the bios update released on the 25th of Feb (link in a previous post).

This is problematic because you lose work that you did not save before the sleep mode turned on. The economic damage in terms of lost working hours is a real concern and switching off the sleep mode cannot be the solution. It is an important functionality of a laptop.

I continue to have this problem for almost 4 month now. I would kindly ask the Lenovo Team to review what it can do.

I was persuaded by my peers to pay a 600$ premium compared to an Asus zenbook, because 'thinkpads never break'. I still like the X1, but I cannot lose work through it, as I have done. We need a solution.

Thank you for the feedback that upgrading to BIOS v1.12 does not resolve returning from sleep mode on X1 Carbon ThinkPads (type 20BS and 20BT), and requires the laptop to be powered off then back on.

Think Engineering has requested additional information. If you are able to assist, please provide the following:

[ BIOS Setup information ]

  • UEFI BIOS version and Embedded Controller Version
  • ME Firmware Version
  • Security -> Security Chip -> Security Chip Selection for “Discrete TPM” or “Intel PTT” and is it Active, Inactive or Disabled ?

[ Others ]

  • Windows version (Clean install / Preload for Windows 10 or upgrade from older widows version?)
  • Is a beep heard when trying to come out of sleep mode? If yes, what kind of beep pattern is heard?
  • What is the LCD panel status when the symptom happens? Does the screen remain black or does it show anything?
  • How does the power button LED behave? Is it on? Does it blink slowly? Does the blink hold solid for several seconds or a quick (0.3~0.5sec cycle) blink?
  • What happens when the system is left on for a while after coming out of sleep? Does the display remain powered off after some length of time or does it turn off after a certain time? Or is the only thing that happens is the power button LED continues to blink?

Thank you,

I experienced the problem initially (hence the ticket creation), but after a while, with seemingly no significant action on my part, it just went away.  So I understand the frustration of those who have the issue, and I am glad that I no longer have to deal with it.

I get this same condition periodically on my X1 as well, blinking light but can't get it out of sleep.  Thought it was an Windows 8.1 issue but same thing with Windows 10.  Frustrating, for sure.

First of all, for those of you having trouble entering the BIOS: select restart instead of shut down. The default for shut down is actually a partial hibernate and won't enable entering BIOS on startup. Restart is a full shutdown+restart and enables Enter to go to boot menu (and from there F1 to enter BIOS).

[ BIOS Setup information ]

  • UEFI BIOS / EC - N14ET34W / N14HT35W
  • ME Firmware - 10.0.45.1024
  • “Discrete TPM” / Active

[ Others ]

  • Windows 10 clean
  • No beep
  • The screen remain black
  • Power button LED blinks slowly
  • The only thing that happens is the power button LED continues to blink

Re: X1 Carbon 2015 won't wake from sleep

Hi Amy,

Have there been any updates from Think Engineering regarding this BIOS issue? I also have the same problem as well as the same system configurations as a few of the others who have posted in this forum, and would like to know how soon until there is a fix in place? As stated by others, I, first, was losing a lot of my work because my system would not wake up. Then, I worked around that sleep problem by just having the display turn off and preventing the sleep function, but now my battery dies at an accelerated rate (expectedly, of course, but still...).

It has been about a month since you sent the request to provide system information, so I'm sure we would all appreciate an update on the latest status. And please let it be known to the team working on this that the prospect of this fix IS THE ONLY THING preventing me from returning my Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon and purchasing a functionally equivalent product from another company.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Same issue, same symptoms with Windows 10. I'm changing my power options to always hibernate instead of sleep, but I'll monitor this thread in hope of a fix.
