X1 Carbon 2nd Gen (2014) Screen upgrade

2017-02-08, 17:10 PM

Hi guys, I have some questions...Hope someone can help!

I have the 2nd gen X1 Carbon 20A8 with HD+ screen (1600x900) and I want to upgrade to the NON-TOUCH WQHD screen (2560x1440). Is this possible? I googled a bit but afraid to order the wrong items.

Can someone please point me in the right direction. Here is the parts catalog for the second generation: https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/x1_carbon_gen2_fru_bom_20150616.pdf

I think I need this screen: 04X3923 LGD 14.0"WQHD AG panel for non-touch; LGD MODEL LP140QH1-SPB1

I think I need a new LCD-cable as well? And a new bezel?

Thanks a lot, appreciate all answers!

The panel, lid, cable, bezel and hinges all are different.

Usually, you are better off selling your machine and buying a different one.

Thanks for the answer!

HD+:

WQHD:

Does this mean that there is motherboard difference between HD+ and WQHD versions. Both NON-TOUCH. I see the cable is different...

Seems like I'm out of luck, is there any HD+ panels I can fit with richer colours? The current screen has terrible colour reproduction...

You'll need the new panel and cable, keep current LCD bezel, mobo etc.

Which side of the cable goes into motherboard and which side goes into the LCD screen?

The WQHD screen has 40pin, has HD+ also 40 pin?

Thanks!

HD+ LCD panels for x1c gen2 laptop have 30 pins connector, WQHD - 40 pins.

Sorry, I've forgotten to mention new "Hinge WQHD non-touch" you need, FRU 00HM108.

The cable's side with tape is for the LCD connector.

Thanks for your help x220forme!

So I need new cable, new hinge (they look the same as those I have?)....

What about bezel, on the list I see "04X5569 N LCD Bezel non-Touch Toray WQHD" but again, I compared with the other ones on the list, they look the same?

Whats the difference?

Again, thanks a lot for your help!

OMG

There were different versions of the fru_bom files. The one I have (dated 2014.05.05) doesn't mention any additional parts for the WQHD LCD installed.

But online partslookup service for x1c gen2 with WQHD LCD installed shows the following parts:
LCD,Non-Touch,WQHD - BEZEL - 04X5569
Rear,Non-Touch,WQHD - COVER - 04X5566

Another p/n for hinges is 00UR148

Summary:
LCD panel, cable, bezel, hinges, rear cover

I don't know what are the differences between the hinges, bezel, cover for HD+ and WQHD models. Their photos don't provide such details.

Thanks for the answer. I have another question, will my laptop support a 1920 x 1080p TN screen or only 1600x900/2560x1440 as listed in the fru list?

I remember my laptop didn't boot when I installed a WiFi card which wasnt on the list.

Regards

There isn't white list for the LCD, "just" mechanical (dimensions, signal connector placement etc), electrical (voltage, power consumtion, signal connector type & interface etc), panel mounting features are important for the compatibility. So, it's not easy to determine compatible LCD panels.

Compare panels for x1c gen2 & 3. You'll find the same panel for both laptops - FRU 04X3923, LGD LP140QH1-SPB1, WQHD. As a gen3 supports FHD panels, there is a chance both laptops panels are interchangable. But there are FHD TN panels only in the gen3 list. May be this trik with another 14" ThinkPads will help to find compatible FHD IPS panel.
