X1 Carbon 4th gen SSD upgrade question

2018-05-27, 0:25 AM

My X1 carbon came with a 128GB SSD M.2 Sata. I ordered a 512GB Samsung NVMe 960 Evo M.2, but didn't realize there is no NVMe->USB adaptor available on the market. Aftering searching the web and trying a few methods, my current plan is to use a M.2 Sata->USB adaptor to migrate the system. Basically I plan to install NMVE 960 Evo in my X1 carbon (that's the only port supporting NVMe), and connect original Sata M.2 SSD to the computer through USB adapter, then boot from USB and migrate the whole Sata SSD to Evo 960 with Samsung migration tool.

However, I can't boot from my original Sata M.2 SSD through USB. I can read the SSD through USB on another computer, so the adaptor works. I tried to disable  security boot, but didn't help.

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if my plan will work and what I did wrong.

Thanks a  lot!
