X1 Carbon 5th Gen SATA SSD replace with NVMe

Is it possible to replace the SATA SSD with a NVMe Drive? In the 4th generation the the M2 slot was capable of using nvme and sata drives.

Re: X1 Carbon 5th Gen SATA SSD replace with NVMe

Hi there,

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.

As I understand that you have query regarding SATA SSD replace with NVMe in your X1 Carbon 5th Gen

As per psref Some: M.2 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4, 32Gb/s (e.g. xxxG SSD PCIe NVMe)

I hope the above information helped you.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Re: X1 Carbon 5th Gen SATA SSD replace with NVMe

Well iam not sure if it answers my question, but my guess is the M2 Slot can either take a SATA or NVMe Drive?

Re: X1 Carbon 5th Gen SATA SSD replace with NVMe

Hi again,

Well answer to your question is it depends upon MTM of the system & it has M.2 slot which is capable of supporting both SATA and NVMe depending on the model which you have purchased, that's the main reason its mentioned some in psref.

I hope the above information helped you.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Re: X1 Carbon 5th Gen SATA SSD replace with NVMe

According to the sheet you provided the 128gb model is only available in the US, for EMEA it doesnt even mention the 128gb option. Yet in Germany, where iam residing, i ordered the 128GB Version in order to replace the drive with a 512 GB Samsung SM951 drive i have in my scrap box. I read that on the 4th Gen it was possible, since the slot was capable of sata and nvme, and that was what lead me to the conclusion that its going to be possible on the 5th gen aswell since they probably will use the same controller. Overall there is a lot of confusing information regarding the x1 5th, so this is no different.

Cheers

Re: X1 Carbon 5th Gen SATA SSD replace with NVMe

Hi friend,

Agree with you that it should support NVMe as they will use the same controller. Still we can confirm if you can provide me the MTM

Regards

Prabhansh

Re: X1 Carbon 5th Gen SATA SSD replace with NVMe

I would be very curious to hear about your results as well. Looking at picking up a new X1 Yoga when they eventually come out and I want to upgrade to a 2TB aftermarket disk but I am curious if it would work or if Lenovo still requires some silly special firmware on the drive in order for it to work.

Re: X1 Carbon 5th Gen SATA SSD replace with NVMe

Got it this morning. Replacement took 2 minutes. So far everything is working well with a Samsung SM961 512GB. 6 Screws on bottom and 1 screw on ssd. No need to remove any plastics or some glued parts. This is something that Lenovo is doing very well ... maintenance is always easy!

kid_blancode,

is your new SSD Samsung generic drive or with Lenovo branded fw/part number?
