X1 Carbon 5th Gen - musical tone boot up error - video linked

2018-01-04, 17:59 PM

This x1 carbon 5th gen is only 2 months old, and this musical tone boot up error has occured at least 6 different times over the last 2 months and only happens when booting up on battery.   It flashes the LED lights on the keyboard and plays a musical tone at bootup and stops, nothing on the screen.

I tried the Lenovo PC Diagnostics android app and it is unable to recognize the tone.

Today, it took over 6 tries of booting up to make it go normally.   As before when this occured, I ran diagnostics with no errors.  I also went in to BIOS and simply saved settings (without changes) a month ago when this happened.

Here is a link to the 5MB video showing the error (with audio):

Any ideas for what this means?

I have on site service and I suspect I'll need to have something replaced to get this fixed.  Please advise.

The android app apparently is broken and wont listen to the code. What bios are you on?

I am on BIOS 1.24.

The tone pattern does not match a short long but rather like 6 to 8 tones that go high low and increase in pitch (frequency) as they are heard.

Yeah it is supposed to work like this but the app seems broken and will only listen for around one second but since you have the real device you might get better results.

Whats absouletly insane is that no windows or linux app for this was made only for android apprently and then they broke it.

@rvcjew..  Thanks for the youtube demo, so I can see how it is supposed to work.

Next time it happens, I will try to use both phones again and up close to the speakers.  I have to think at some level this must have worked sometime!   Now that I know how to repeat the sound pressing Fn I will  try again.    Last time it happened I was booting up from in a meeting full of people that gave me funny looks as I tried and tried to get it going again.     (on an 85% battery and from a full windows startup)    The Logo never shows up when it starts beeping.

Yeah not a good sign. I hope it works for you it would not work for me over your video and other videos I found that people could test it. This was on either of my two phones I even put an older apk of the app (version in the video) to see if it made a difference and i'm wondering if my speakers just change the tone too much for it to work and need a raw device to make the tones.

fyi...
I have had this boot up error occur another random 5 times since this posting. Only happens when on battery power.

I was able to finally get the android app to recognize the tone. The error info is follows:

Code 0284
Catastrophic
TCG-compliant functionality-related error (might be the BIOS code validation failure)
Actions: replace the system board (service provider only)

Given it is not permanent, not sure what to do. I have another 4 months of warranty.

I would backup your SSD (image it just in case) and perhaps update your bios, your saying it only happens when on battery are you sure your battery is not bad? What does Vantage say about it? I would tell the support the code you got though to see what they say.
