X1 Carbon 6th Gen Fans Run with Sleep & Plugged In

2020-05-06, 6:54 AM

I'm having an odd problem where whenever I plug my laptop into power and close the lid to sleep, the fans kick into high gear and will spin up and down for quite a while. The laptop is in sleep, but for whatever reason something's making the fans go on. It doesn't feel hot when I touch the bottom of it but the fans just runs for quite a while. If I open the laptop the fans return to normal speed, but as soon as I close it on power they just whir right on up. I updated software, and firmware, enabled hibernation (which helps because it goes to deep sleep quicker), disabled quick start up, and made sure all thunderbolt drivers were updated, and disabled the ability for the thunderbolt/usbc to pull the device out of sleep with no luck... Not sure what else to do... I did a sleep study, but that only helps when its not plugged in and that seems to be fine (for the most part).

What happens if you shut down the laptop instead of putting it to sleep? Do the fans still keep on?

To me its sounding like the BIOS is keeping the laptop fans on to cool itself down -- might want to double check you've got the latest BIOS and if so try going into the BIOS and set factory defaults to see if any improvement

If youre putting the computer to sleep and the fans are staying on I'd assume a background task is running on the laptop that's preventing the laptop from entering sleep mode.

I believe Lenovo uses a service that runs in the background called 'Lenovo Easy Resume' that keeps the laptop running to finish jobs that are stlil running -- if you load msconfig.msc and goto the Services tab then you might want to look at disabling that service temporarily and after a restart see if that shows any improvement.

Good luck!

Haha, I'm about to throw this POS out the window and get a Mac, I've been at it for over 5 hours now with no luck as to what it is, not even event viewer shows me anything of use. Shut down a bunch of services think I got it then it all starts over again. The only consistent thing is shutting WiFi off lets it go to sleep so something is still communicating with wifi... or its just making me think i have a solution just to crap in my face the second i think i got something...

I reset my PC and so far looks like it fixed the issue. Good thing I have everything saved in Dropbox or it would have been a pain...
