Re: X1 Carbon 6th Gen: Synaptics Touchpad Firmware Update broke Touchpad and Trackpoint

2018-11-14, 3:28 AM
The firmware upgrade tool also works in my X1 Carbon 6th gen with NFC device. I think Synaptics Touchpad driver is required before installing the firmware. So make sure touchpad driver is installed correctly.

To double check touchpad driver in Device Manager
Under Mice and other pointing Devices, "Synaptics Pointing Device" is found
Under System devices, "Synaptics SMBus Driver" is found

If you have ever installed n23gc04w.exe, you can as well see the extracted files in C:\Drivers\Win\TouchpadFW
Run Synreflash.exe and see PR2812761-TM3288-011-0808.img then click start.
After reflash complete, shutdown and turn on the system to check if touchpad can recover.
Hope this helps.

I reinstalled the driver.

"Synaptics Pointing Device" is not visible in the Device Manager (the others are).

Flashing always fails with error 0x69 and I see this screen:

try re-installing Synaptics touchpad driver if "Synaptics Pointing Device" could appear back in Device Manager https://support.lenovo.com/ch/en/downloads/ds502229

If you installed the Synaptics Driver but "Synaptics Pointing Device" is not visible in the Device Manager, maybe it's hidden.
Try checking "Show Hidden Devices" and check again if it's there.
If you can find it, try clean install by uninstalling the device first.

1. Right-click Uninstall
2. Make sure to select "Delete the driver software for this device."
3. Check "Synaptics SMBus Driver" under System Devices and uninstall it if it's still there.
4. Restart the system.

When it's uninstalled you can find "PS/2 Compatible Mouse" under Mice and Pointing Devices.
If not, try selecting the "Show Hidden Devices" again.

Lastly, install the Synaptics Touchpad Driver and check if the machine can recover.

Thanks for your comments.

I tried all of that and "Synaptics Pointing Device" is indeed hidden (but not working).

The "PS/2 Compatible Mouse" also doesn't show up.

So the reflashing didn't work.

You cannot find "PS/2 Compatible Mouse" if Synaptics SMBus and Synaptics Pointing Device is still present.
You can try the steps I mentioned earlier. Uninstall Synaptics Pointing Device and SMBus Driver > then restart the System.
Then check again the device manager if there is "PS/2...".

Then install the driver again and check if "Synaptics Pointing" and "SMBus" will install successfully.
afaik, you cannot update the firmware without the driver.

Managed to install and delete SMBus and Synaptics Pointing Device and then find PS/2. It has the same icon, i.e. the orange exclamation mark.

Following this I tried to run the Reflash, but get the same Error (0x69) again. There's also a prompt to send the log file to Synaptics but no log file is generated in the folder.

I think he/she meant you need to reinstall the driver first and then reflash

I'm not sure which exactly you mean by this, can you specify?

My current state: I manage to get my device manager to say PS/2 Compatible device for ~3 minutes before it changes to Synaptics Pointing Device, and this is if I uninstall both drivers and choose delete the files in the prompt, and then restart the computer.

In these 3 minutes I could try running one of these things:
- C:\DRIVERS\TouchpadFW (SynReflash.exe which runs PR2812761-TM3288-011-0808.img) (does not work, Error 0x69)

- UNAV Setup (Setup.exe in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\UNAV)

- FWUpdate.exe or TrackPoint_Firmware_Update_Utility.exe in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\Elantech_TrackPointFW

- Let Windows try to update the PS/2 Driver in Device Manager (downloads a driver, and attempts to install but gets error 24)

Any suggestions?
