Re: X1 Carbon 6th Gen: Synaptics Touchpad Firmware Update broke Touchpad and Trackpoint

Thank your for reporting your experience.

I upgraded to 1.34 (risking to brick the X1 even harder), but it didn't help.

Hi, I just wanted to share my experience with this issue. After the synaptics touchpad firmware update my trackpoint and the touch pad buttons stopped working on my X1C6. The touchpad was working fine.

I am running Windows 10 and my BIOS version is 1.34. In the mouse settings window, under the "Thinkpad" tab, the "Enable Trackpoint" section was grayed out. It was enabled in the BIOS.

I tried reinstalling the driver for the Synaptics Pointing Device in the device manager, but that didn't fix the issue. So I contacted the Lenovo Support and they had me install the followling two files:

TrackPoint Firmware Update Utility for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen (Type 20KH, 20KG)

Synaptics Touchpad Firmware for Windows 10 (64-bit) - Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen (Type 20KH, 20KG)

After installing the firmware update files and rebooting, my trackpoint and the touchpad buttons started working again.

Thought I would just share my experience just in case it helps anyone. Cheers.

Thank you.

The ReadMe for the first link in your post, TrackPoint Firmware update says, "System must apply the Synaptics Touchpad Firmware (N23GC04W: PR2698617/PR2812761) prior to applying this TrackPoint Firmware Update Utility." That's the second link in your post.

Did you install these updates in the order of the links, or did you install the Synaptics Touchpad Firmware first and then the TrackPoint?

Hi,

I installed the trackpoint driver first. It required a reboot. After reboot my trackpoint and touchpad buttons started working again.I still went ahead and installed the touchpad driver next.

I didn't read the details for those files. Just installed as in the order it was pasted by the service cetner guy in the chat window. I only became aware of the order of the installation after reading your post. So in that sense, I didn't comply with the pre requisite as I installed the Trackpoint driver before the Synaptics Touchpad driver. Glad it still worked. :-) Cheers.

You're doubly lucky then, (1) that order of installation doesn't seem to matter and (2) that the 1.0.0.3 version TrackPoint firmware fixed the issue. In my case that version of firmware also doesn't work, i.e. the install fails in the same way that the newer version did.

Re: X1 Carbon 6th Gen: Synaptics Touchpad Firmware Update broke Touchpad and Trackpoint

I had the same problem with my x1carbon 2018,I just bought it last week!

I reinstalled the win10 and  downloaded all the drivers and firmware from Lenovo's website. vertion of BIOS is  1.34,Of course include the touchpad and pointer,I updated them too, then the touchpad and pointer stopworking! There are no items in devicesmanger f the win10,becuase these hardware can not be recognise at all(This is the requirement to reinstall the firmware ),So I can't repair it using current known ways.

I'm looking forward having the  solution via foftware recently ,otherwise I will have to  return it(I like this laptop except this problem.).

I've seen all of above talking above ,The reason may be the newest touchpad firmware only suitable for some module (such as the module with NFC) ,the firmware is incompatible to other X1,this is the fault of LENOVO!!!

If anybody know how to solve please tell me.Thankyou.

Return it as quick as possible (if you can)!

Lenovo is not able to provide spare parts in any reasonable timeframe and it will be much quicker to get a new one.

Generally, I would recommend buying a Laptop from a different brand. The X1 series are fundamentally broken machines and Lenovo is regularly bricking them with firmware quirks.

Hopefully this will be fixed for Lenovo P52 users, too. Today i were in contact with lenovo-support they offered me a on-site-replacement of my touchpad and now i am waiting for the service-call of the technician. The touchpad is not in stock and a delivery-date is unknown.

But apparently not for everyone. I tried to install N23GC05W. The Windows console terminated without any messages. "PackRat ID" shows 2685418 which is an older version.

Then I tried to reinstall the TrackPoint firmware n23g901w. It ran for several minutes, then again ended in failure with a timeout message.

The TouchPad continues to work but the TrackPoint and the two button bars above the TouchPad are still dead.
