X1 Carbon 6th Gen - extended monitor flickering

2019-08-15, 15:24 PM

I have a brand new X1 Carbon 6th gen with the Ultra dock.  I've attached an HPZR30w monitor to it but it flickers about every 5-10 seconds.  I've run all of the driver updates for each piece of hardware and all of my software updates as well.   Connection cable is a high speed display port to display port cable.

Any suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem with a 5th gen.  Updated all the drivers and firmware yesterday, including for the USB-C dock.

I am connecting to the monitor through USB-C.

The blinking happens more frequently when the dock is connected, but does still occur when it's not.

I took a video of the problem I am seeing: https://photos.app.goo.gl/hK7YcmxEouJhgy8p8

I managed to resolve the issue by replacing the USB-C cable between the laptop and the dock.

I was using a non-Lenovo one.

I am now using the supplied cable and I have had 3 days without any flickering.

I hit this as well, with a 60 hz USB C to HDMI cable. I found that reducing the refresh from 60 hz to 30 hz made the flicker go away.

Re:X1 Carbon 6th Gen - extended monitor flickering

I have two Ultra Dock stations - one at home connecting two monitors and one in the office connecting three monitors.  In either configuration, the external monitors flicker, never the laptop screen.

I'm using the ThinkVision P27h-10 monitors in both configurations with Lenovo provided cables so the setup is all Lenovo end-to-end.

X1 Carbon: System Model 20KGS60S0N
Ultra Dock:  PN SD20T34312 (Type: 40AJ)
Monitors:  FRU # 00PC174 (MFG'd 2019)

The user "J_K_T" (Paper Tape) posted at [admin note: topics merged, link removed] showing https://photos.app.goo.gl/hK7YcmxEouJhgy8p8 which is the same issue.

My office setup/config, which matters the most, is the following:

Monitor-1 - DP direct to dock
 Monitor-2 - DP to DP-> of Monitor-3
Monitor-3 - DP direct to dock

The dock is power using the 135W AC Adapter (Model:  ADL135NLC2A)

Any ideas what's up?

Any diags?

Overheating?

Re:X1 Carbon 6th Gen + ThinkPad Ultra Dock + 3 ThinkVision P27h-10 monitors; extended monitors flicker

Hi noahmt,

Welcome to Lenovo Community

Have you tried connecting the external display directly to the laptop, bypassing the docking station?

Other folks did found that reducing the refresh rate from 60 hz to 30 hz made the flicker go away.

Update us how it goes.

Regards
