Rolling back the drive has provided an apparent solution. Time will tell.

The Lenovo Thinkpad x1 Carbon Gen 6, This wifi version of the driver seems to allow it to wake up from sleep.

If newer versions are installed, uninstall them and 'delete software' when doing so. Have this version ready:

Version: 20.120.1 (Previously Released) Date: 3/6/2019

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28623/Windows-10-Wi-Fi-Drivers-for-Intel-Wireless-Adapters?product=94150

In Driver Details in WIndows:
date: 2/12/19
Version: 20.70.7.1  (working)

Yes, at the time of this writing, it's very old and a few versions old.

Re: X1 Carbon 6th Gen, loosing wifi gateway after SLEEP

Thank you so much for the "Working" solution!  I got my new X1 Carbon Gen 6 laptop in June, and ran into this WiFi problem. I've been searching the internet and trying different solutions that the WIN10 forum suggested. I spent hours on this problem and finally read your solution yesterday and installed the latest Intel Dual Band Wireless AC8265 driver 20.70.11.3.

By the way, my X1 laptop came with the WIN 1809 version installed, I'm so disappointed that Lenovo did not install the lastest WIN10 1903 version, I had to do that myself hoping it will solve the WiFi problem, but it did not. Only the WiFi adapter driver 20.70.11.3 solved the probem!

BTW, I also called Lenovo yesterday and they gave me the wrong answer and solution. What vehicle do we have to tell Lenovo this is the correct solution so other users don't waste so much time like I did?

Thank you so much, I'm finally happy with my new X1 Carbon laptop!

Humble

Yes, agree with Humble.  I have spent what few precious 'spare' hours I can find downloading recommended updates, and trying to reach support by email and telephone. So far all Lenovo did was send me a box to return the machine for repair. Thank goodness for this forum! Thanks to all for the thread. Following the fix instructions now......

Having this same problem with a brand new X1 Carbon 7th Gen. Happens randomly but at least 3 or 4 times daily. Lenovo has said they can swap in a new motherboard for me w/ the warranty, but I'd like to try to troubleshoot before going that much of a dramatic route. Clearly seems like a software/driver issue.
