X1 Carbon 6th Gen vs X1 Yoga 3rd Gen - What’s the better choice?

2018-08-27, 23:15 PM

Hello! I’m new to Lenovo products and since I’m moving on with my education I’m looking for a good laptop that I can use for light gaming, but as well as school work of course. I’ve so far narrowed my choices down to the X1 Carbon 6th Generation laptop and the X1 Yoga 3rd Generation laptop.

I was wondering if anyone could give me suggestions on which one is best. I’m aiming for a laptop that isn’t too buggy, but has a sufficient amount of features that I will find helpful.

Thanks!

The big difference is the touchscreen on the yoga - either you want/need that or you don't.

Do you want/need the pen?  Do you want tablet functionality?  If yes get the X1 Yoga 3.

Do you know the comparison between them bug-wise?

Similar bugs. :)  Both models have trackpoint drift problems for quite a few people. Not sure how widespread this is, but they are lively threads. The Yoga has shown some 'ghost taps' for some, myself included. That seems to be a smaller group though. I wouldn't hold off on buying, but if you see ghost taps happening, deal with it immediately (return or repair).

On the topic of gaming, there's a pretty great Lenovo eGPU that is usually $400, but that sometimes drops to $280 in price. It's super compact and holds a GTX1050, same as in the smaller Surface Book 2. Good enough to play some pretty decent VR games. Single TB3 cable to connect, and it works like a docking station, worth a look. Admittedly it's a bit finicky to set up, but once it's up, it's perfect.

I have the X1C6.  I was wary of all the bug reports on this forum, but gave it a shot, along with the TB3 dock.  Everything is working just fine for me.

I considered the Yoga as well.  I think the only significant difference is the Yoga's tablet mode, folding over the screen completely.  You gain that, ummm, flexibility, at the cost of slight increase in thickness and weight.  I believe they are largely the same otherwise.  I have a touch screen on my X1C6, so the Yoga is not unique in that regard.

Using it as a tablet is not the best as it is a bit too heavy for it.

The good think about the touchscreen is that you will start using it even you use it as a laptop. Also if you are traveling a lot, the airplane crew are thinking it is a tablet and they not bother you to shut it down during landing or take off. Just put it in tablet mode and here it is. This is then just a big tablet.

I will stil buy the yoga version for those reasons.

Yeah, it was a tough decision.  But, in the end, I went for lighter and thinner, particular since I walk to work.  I'm happy with the decision to get the Carbon.  The touch screen is a nice perk.  Most of the time I have it docked but, when I grab it to show someone something, I find myself using the touch screen more than the touchpad.

I have the Yoga 3rd gen.  Didn't think I'd use the pen as much when I first bought it but its actually fantastic.  Any thoughts or notes I can easily write down in OneNote and have everything saved.  The screen capture/editing featuring is great to use too, I use mine for daily trading reviews and thoughts right on the snapshot which acts as a visual aid to relate my thoughts.  I don't even notice the weight of the laptop its so light.  As for bugs, mine is in the shop for ghost touches but other than that, been the best laptop Ive ever owned (purchased over 10, Dell, HP, Acer, etc).  Buy the accidental protection if you're a student, not much more and provides ease of mind.
