X1 Carbon 6th Throttled to ~15 W/~80° C Under Load While on Desk/65 W AC

2020-08-02, 10:10 AM

Hi all,

Since I'm a Linux user with a X1 Carbon 6th Gen, I've been closely following the giant thread over on the Linux forums about the too aggressive power throttling of many Thinkpads under Linux.

That thread sort of ended with Lenovo making a workaround firmware release for some models, but not all of them, and not for my X1C6.

However, recently I got curious and booted Windows on the machine, and to my surprise, the aggressive throttling can be seen there as well, even with Lenovo's own DPTF driver installed.

How I Tested

  1. Place the laptop on a desk at 24° C ambient temperature, with 65 W AC plugged in
  2. Verify that the Config → Power → Adaptive Thermal Management → Scheme for AC BIOS option is set to Maximum Performance
  3. Boot Windows 10 on an USB stick
  4. Install all updates suggested by Lenovo Vantage
  5. Verify that Intelligent Cooling under My Device Settings → Power in Lenovo Vantage is turned On
  6. Run a 5 minute CPU stress test in Intel Extreme Tuning Utility
  7. Observe the configured TDP and CPU package temperature

The Result

Notice how the package TDP is lowered down to around 15 W (often lower than that), keeping the package temperature at around 80° C.

I would expect the laptop to run at a significantly higher configured TDP than that when sitting on a desk.

I found no good way of listing all installed firmware/BIOS versions under Windows, so here they are as reported by `fwupdmgr` under Linux:

It should be all the latest versions from LVFS.

I would appreciate if a Lenovo representative could confirm that what I'm seeing is unexpected behavior. The laptop should run at a higher TDP than this when on a desk top, right?

@MarkRHPearson since you were the contact person on the big cTDP/Linux thread, perhaps you can comment?
