Re: X1 Carbon 6th gen : Fan Noise

Little update. I got an aftermarket 204 cooler and it runs slower than 203. So, you'll get a high pitched noise free cooler but with a slower fan which results in worse thermals under stress. I think I'll return the 204 and revert back to 203. I'll just tolerate the sound this cooler emits

Re: X1 Carbon 6th gen : Fan Noise

I have Firefox running with 3 windows open on it. Each Window has 1 tab open with the exception of window with 2 tabs.  The CPU Fan has been running non stop with the task manager showing 50% of the memory being used up. Roughly 4950 MB of Memory being used by Firefox and 44% of the CPU. **bleep**..? My iPad Pro has no fan in it and can easily handle 4 tabs open without using 50% of the CPU memory to run 4 simple tabs with 3 windows open. All this technology today with all this RAM and a $1700 high end notebook having difficutly running a few browser tabs..? Literally here **bleep**..?

Don’t blame the hardware if it’s a software issue. the number of tabs is irrelevant. All it takes for for a faulty java script, extension, etc and the CPU consumption shoots up.

I just found out the fan installed in my X1 Carbon 6th Gen i7 is the i5 fan (source: Reddit).  I'm trying to get Tech Support to replace it with the correct part number 01YR203 or 01YR204 under warranty, but it's been quite frustrating thus far.

you have the right cooler,  reddit is not a source since my cat can open a thread calling herself a technician.

You have the 01YR203 . it runs higher RPM fan paying the price of a little high pitched noise (if you can hear it and if it bothers you). If you pay attention the diameter of the fan can't be any larger in 01YR204 since the space between the battery and the heat pipes is the same.

I don’t get it.. I have 9 tabs open on my iPhone and iPad now with no fan running, no CPU usage at 40-60% and am not using 5gb of ram to have those tabs open in my browser. Surely this is not right. My iPhone and tablet are both quiet with no heat and fans while my new C1 Carbon gets warm at the bottom and seems to struggle with a few browsers open. One would think that a smartphone and tablet would not perform as well as a high end notebook which has ventilation,a fan and a better processor.

@Expatmark

My x1 sits at 0-10%CPU and 34-40°C with 10-15 chrome tabs, LaTeX editor and spotify streaming. You should check your processes better

If you Could open up 4-5 tabs of investing.com then show me how much RAM and CPU power is used would be great. Use the Windows task manager to show please. Perhaps I got a bad Thinkpad then..

Expatmark do you really think, seriously, that a single website draining your resources could somehow be linked to a defective hardware? BTW here you are:I highly suggest you search for a software issue, a bad installation, a virus, a malware, a cryptominer etc...

No! High CPU utilisation cannot he caused by a bad ThinkPad, only bad software.

Maybe there’s a coin miner running in your b/g or browser.
