Re: X1 Carbon 6th gen : Fan Noise

I was concerned if the reinstall will affect the battery life since PC manufacturers adjust Wins to maximize the battery life.

Today, I just got a chance to use the unit on battery. I had the battery saver on and set the brightness to 50%. I have been using this setting on my old unit that I was about to return to Lenovo for two months. Under it, Wins estimation usually showed me that the battery will last for more than 9 hours after a full charge. I never used the laptop long enough to let the battery die, but it was very sound.

However, with the same setting after a clean reinstall from MS on my new laptop. The Wins estimation showed me 7 hours for most and usually just 5 hours or something. I saw the battery reduce 10 percent within 10 mins for simple web browsing and email stuff. I've restarted and charged the battery to let Wins figure out the estimation for a few times. I did feel the battery percent decreased faster now than Lenovo's factory setting Wins 10.

I wonder if someone has also experienced this difference like me. Indeed, I still need to use the laptop on battery more often to make a final conclusion. But for those who want to reinstall a clean Wins 10, please be aware that this might be a trade-off you have to make. Meanwhile, even though the reinstall can remit the fan noise and overheating issue, in my opinion, this laptop is far away to be considered having good heat management. The fan will still run if CUP usage exceeds 20% and become crazy when you play FHD videos, downloading or something. If only using it for some web browsing and easy tasks, then what is the point to buy this 8th CPU? Given how much Lenovo charges for this unit and the price and performance of the counterparts from other company, I am not sure I will recommend this PC to anyone I know.

I will keep you guys posted.

After we did the clean installation, if the fan doesn't kick in that much (which this is the case), we should have longer battery life, right?

This is what i have - I think it's pretty decent? I have bluetooth on, on wifi, two skype, google drive sync, sugarsync, another file sync n share, kis, ondrive and etc on backround and running about 20 windows, i.e. outlook 2016, word 2016, firefox ~20 tabs, whatsapp desktop....

This reviewer claimed he got 15 hours. Don't know if that is real. What we are missing here is a clear before and after clean install with respect to the Windows 10 battery life estimate (as well as a real test).

This reviewer claimed up to 22 hours with no stress, but seemed to find about 8 hours in normal use. This review is really interesting in that the reviewer points out how hot the unit ran for him.

you really have to take into consideration the specs. the FHD and HDR display makes a huge different. you also save some hours vs i5-8250, i7-8550, i7-8650, etc. i haven't heard of anyone getting nearly 15 hours on any model of the x1 carbons.
5-10 hours seems more correct. 5 for the hdr i7 and closer to 10 with lower models from what others have posted on differnet posts

Yeah, if I can get 10 I will be crazy happy - maybe will need 0% brightness, all apps closed and in a room with temp 20’c? ;)

My spec maxed out and I ever seen 6 hours on better battery.

Just downloaded the Lenovo recovery disc, hand a bit itchy thinking to do another installation but I have got 100gb data to migrate and >500k outlook indexing to do.......

Anyone can comment, if I will get the same "conditions" as clean Win 10 installation using Lenovo Recovery image?

Note: I wiped out all partition created by Lenovo previously and used clean Win 10 from @msft, Lenovo claimed they have fixed the issues on Win 10 1803, I supposed the new Lenovo Recovery image should comes with Win 10 1803.

Re: X1 Carbon 6th gen : Fan Noise

Hi all,

I've just received mine today. I can confirm that the fan only spun one ONCE. This was when I first logged into Windows after setting it up via the Cortana screens etc. I've been using the laptop for hours, setting it up and installing various software. The fan has never spun up throughout this process.

I am running on the internal battery power though.

i use better battery mode and i get 5-8 hours as well. i get 5 if i'm plugged into my 3k monitor and doing work and other stuff and 7-8 if i'm just using my laptop for basic web browsing etc.
I can't confirm for clean Win 10 installation b/c i'm kind of lazy to reinstall everything

the hours aren't what was advertised but i'm pretty satisifed.

at least the fan's aren't crazy which was the main issue of this post right?

Using battery will hardly let the fan kicks in unless constant CPU >15% CPU loads or mid/high usage; try to plug in? For new X1C6 I think it ship with 1803 hence will not have such issue (according to Lenovo).

I am not very satisfy with the fix Lenovo provided, the fan still kinda weird some time; after the clean installation I think it's pretty decent and quiet on both battery/plugged.

I just downloaded Lenovo recovery media, unfortunately it's still on 1709 :(

BrianSu: This is good news. Also consistent with the idea that Lenovo made a mistake in some of the earlier units with respect to heating and the fan. For my clean install of Windows 10 from MS, it's about the same with the fan. Sounds like it's about the same either way.
