Re: X1 Carbon 6th gen : Fan Noise

2018-12-28, 22:37 PM

I'm pretty happy with the thermals on my X1C6 with i7 8550 CPU. I don't think there is an inherrent design problem.

Sittinng on a desk with the screen closed and external monitors and keyboard connected via USB-C, running on external power (not charging), the idle CPU temp is normally less than 50C and the fan is off.

I haven't done a clean reinstall of Windows, and haven't done any tweaking  except to undervolt the CPU and cache by 0.90v using ThrottleStop. It is pretty much just the stock Windows install from Lenovo with all updates from Lenovo and Microsoft.

A few tips:

- Use the task manager to check for any unexpected programs that may be using the CPU. Idle CPU usage should be less than 5% unless some background software update is happening.

- In the battery icon in the system tray, set the power mode to "Better Performance". If you set it to "Best Performance", that seems to lock the CPU at high frequency instead of ramping the frequency up/down as needed.

I'm running better performance setting. Also set the thermal setting within the BIOS to balanced. The fan is very silent when I'm not connected into power.

I use TPFanControl and its "Smart" setting. Now the fan rarely comes on. https://sourceforge.net/projects/tp4xfancontrol/

I downloaded this and with the smart setting, the fan is always on at 4000rpm.

My cpu temp is like 55-57C and the fan is on while plugged in. I'm on the latest BIOS with "balanced" setting inside the BIOS and windows power mode is on better battery.

Re: X1 Carbon 6th gen : Fan Noise

2019-03-31, 10:50 AM

I am wondering why this issue has been marked as "solved" - I am using a brand new X1C G6 since 2 weeks, Type 20KG-S7WX00 with i7-8550U, 16 GB RAM, Win 10x64 v. 1803, Bios v. 1.37 - and the thermals are still absolutely frustrating. With AC plugged in and 10-20% CPU usage, the fan is coming on in idle mode every 5 min, in docking mode (lid closed, pro dock 2018, 1 monitor) the same - absolutely annoying. The CPU normally runs between 50 and 70 degrees celsius, which is also quite hot but seems to be "normal" for this congiruation. In battery mode everything is good, absolutely no fan issues at all.

I've read through all of the instructions, applied the hotfix https://support.lenovo.com/at/de/solutions/ht506625, set in BIOS the CPU performance on balanced, reset the energy/ battery management to factory standards (balanced) - still no significant improvement.

With TPfancontrol and "Smart settings" also no significant improvement. Can anybody help?

OK you've provided the CPU Usage, but what's the clock speed at that load? The original overheating problem was caused by incorrect speed.

Here's the CPU-Z report - 6 tabs in chrome, outlook, 1 word file, task manager and CPU-Z opened - that's it ;)

TPfancontrol says that CPU runs on 95 degrees celsius (!) and fan on position 7 with 6698 rpm...

Thanks for your help!

Hi your clock speed is very high. Did you run the two PowerShell commands that Lenovo issued to fix the incorrect TurboBoost problem??

I have 2 ThinkPads, one with an 8650U and the other with 8550U. Neither have this issue.  The Carbon X1 came with the incorrect setting but those commands fixed it.

Can you provide me with a link for this powershell fix?
