X1 Carbon 6th gen: Fan stays on even after sleep - how to stop this?

Repro step:

1. Realize you have 1 minute to catch the train

2. Close the X1 carbon 6th gen lid, pull Thunderbolt 3 cable

3. Stick laptop in backpack.

hours later

4. Find your backpack quite warm. Discover the X1's battery has drained out.

This wasn't a thing on my T460s. Is there a way to stop/manage the fan running after sleep?

I noticed it doesn't do this if you put the laptop to sleep when not connected to the Thunderbolt 3 cable.

Thanks.
