Can you go to device manager and look under System Devices. At the very bottom you should see the "Thunderbolt(TM) Controller - 15D2"
See attached image.
Pls let me know.

Ok please try this. Save all your work. Press the power reset button on the bottom of the system. Its a tiny hole. You'll need a paper clip.
Press the pwr button. When the system starts pls check the device manager again and see if the controller is there. If it is please try installing the Thunderbolt FW and SW again.
Let me know how you get on.

Ok great. I would still do the Thunderbolt updates as it will disappear again. I had same issue as you and fixed once the FW and SW were updated.
Let me know if you need anymore assistance.
Once you think this is fixed after a few days can you mark this as Solved pls.

Thought I would chime in that this fix helped me. My X1 Carbon had been connecting with no issues for well over a year. All of a sudden it would not connect to one of my monitors through hdmi or the docking station (display port would still work). The paper clip reset worked! Thanks!

I am a X1C 6th model 20KH user. Also have the similar issue after update the TB3 FW from below URL.
The HDMI is still not working although press the power reset button on the bottom of the system. The TBT3 controller is not shown in device manager. I also retry the FW update tool(n23tf13w.exe) again and again, but it says "No active Thunderbolt(TM) controller found in the system".
The TB3 FW and SW are the latest. I have been already try many times but seems not work. Can anyone help me.

I have the exact same problem. I have attempted everything described in this post, to no avail. My set-up is similar: Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 6, Windows 10, 20KG. The laptop is brand-new and completely up-to-date.
