X1 Carbon 7 (X1C7): Can't enter BIOS using F1, still boot into Windows 10 normally

2020-11-03, 16:03 PM

My laptop X1C7 (Model 20R10015US) sometime halts suddenly, perhaps after updating to BIOS 1.27  (N2HUJ32W) from BIOS 1.25-1.14 (N2HUJ30W). This issue has been reported at https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-7-X1C7-HAL-error-event-ID-16-The-iommu-fault-reporting-has-been-initialized/m-p/5046210

I tried to roll back to BIOS 1.25-1.14 but got a rollback flash failure because the “Secure Rollback Prevention” had been enabled (similar to the problem posted at https://support.lenovo.com/se/en/solutions/ht117858). However, I could not enter BIOS, only a blank screen was showing after

- Pressing F1 (after pressing Enter when the Lenovo logo display), then F1 or F12 at the BIOS boot menu

- Restarting Windows (with SHIFT pressed while restarting) into UEFI settings

Note that I still can boot into Windows normally and access the EFI partition with "mountvol X: /s" at an elevated command prompt.

Settings at the time the issue happened:

My laptop has been configured to use the BIOS Master password with fingerprint and PIN, which was working normally before.

The issue has been completely solved by upgrading to the new BIOS version:

1.44  (Machine types: 20QF, 20QG, 20QD, 20QE)
1.33  (Machine types: 20SA, 20SB, 20R1, 20R2)

I found a workaround to this problem:

1) Find the recently added Synaptics Fingerprint Reader Preboot Manager application, and run it with Administrator

2) Un-check the option "Use fingerprint logon instead of power-on and hard drive passwords"

3) Reboot the laptop into BIOS mode (using Enter then F1,...), and enter Supervisor password when asked.

It should run successfully.

The question is that: There is an option in BIOS that allows us to enable "authentication by a fingerprint" at predesktop (set Security > Fingerprint > Predesktop Authentication = ON), which used to work well before installing Synaptics Fingerprint Reader Preboot Manager; particularly I can use fingerprint to login to BIOS. Why it stop working?

I have just tried with the latest version of BIOS, v1.32. Here are the results: When BIOS supervisor password is set.

There seems to be a conflict between "Use fingerprint logon instead of power-on and hard drive passwords" = ON and the availability of fingerprints: either one is OK but both can't be co-existing:

"Use fingerprint logon instead of power-on and hard drive passwords" = ON & fingerprints = 0 => OK

"Use fingerprint logon instead of power-on and hard drive passwords" = OFF & fingerprints > 0 => OK

"Use fingerprint logon instead of power-on and hard drive passwords" = ON & fingerprints > 0 => can't boot into BIOS
