X1 Carbon 7th Gen - WWAN iisues

2019-10-15, 22:32 PM

Brand new device and install of Win 10 1809, updated, with the latest Lenovo Fibocom L850-GL drivers installed and verified, APN configured, IPv4 set to DHCP, network reset, card disabled and reenabled, etc - basically all the remedies I could find.

The WWAN connection has not worked once despite two days of trying to get it to work.

It reports "No service", twice it got to the point that I could click "Connect", but it never connected.

The SIM works fine in X1C3 with Windows 7 or in an old Android phone.

I am getting rapidly frustrated with Windows 10 being the only option and the dismal state of drivers:

1. No Synaptcis touchpad driver, thus much less configurability of the features, no side scrolling

2. External microphone level is extremely low, unclear why, even with the boost set to 20dB

3. Harware microphone switch in some cases misses a device, so the microphone may not be muted in the end

4. WWAN impossible to get working

This is simply too many issues, the device is not nearly usable as it should be. I am completely disappointed.

Hi billyj,

Did you disable the battery before installing the SIM? If not, try the emergency reset button.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

Hello,

No, I did not. I do not think it is needed, the SIM is recognized without an issue.

I have done multiple swaps, even tried two different SIMs provisioned by my wireless provider.

The SIM is not at the root of the problem.

As a last step yesterday, I removed the APN because someone suggested it needs to be added as a last step.

This morning, without doing anything, I saw a message that APN needed to added, and upon adding it, I connected for the first time and things worked, albeit very slowly (compared to the same provider through my phone+hotspot.

However, turning Cellular off and on again broke everything again, I only get "No Service", no reconnect at all, so I am back to square 1.

Bottom line - I know now that everything works, howeve the cellular connection is for all purposes unusable,

Bill

Try the emergency reset button. It often clears up strange input/output behavior.

The button just restarts the computer, it of course does not fix any broken software.

And the software - meaning the combination of Windows and the driver - is clearly broken.

I see the Fibocom exe runnng often, consuming CPU cycles, I see completely inconsistent behaviour, connection status, constant retrying, overall instability.

This is not tenable for a premium device.

I have gone back to the old X1C3 and Windows 7. That combination is rock solid and works very well, unlike the mess that Windows 10 is.

Lenovo: Your premium hardware is worthless without good drivers. Please work on the drivers.

That's odd, the emergence reset button should not restart the system. Try again but follow these steps:

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

The emergency reset button resets the computer so that it can be restarted. It is a hardware feature, does nothing to the software installed on the computer.

I will check out the updated driver that was released recently and report back.
