X1 Carbon 7th Gen / Yoga 4th Gen - camera not working (SOLVED).

2020-05-18, 17:23 PM

The reason I'm posting this, is that I found a solution and now my camera is working again!

Okay, so I've got a brand new X1 Carbon 7th Gen Type 20QD Laptop.

And, like many others, I had a problem with the camera.

I think same solution might work for Yoga 4th Gen.

So here is the story. I was updating drivers on my new Lenovo X1 Carbon 7th Gen.

When I moved to update the camera drivers I had no idea how to select which firmware should I upload.

If you look at the download page here:

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-carbon-7th-gen-type-20qd-20qe/20qd/downloads/driver-list/component?name=Camera%20and%20Card%20Reader

You will see four items. Three firmware updates and one driver for Windows 10.

Firmware:

  • Integrated Camera Device Firmware for Azurewave/AM-8GF56BB-A
  • Integrated Camera Device Firmware for Bison/BNGL19VB2
  • Integrated Camera Device Firmware for Chicony/CKFIH30

Driver:

  • Integrated Camera Driver for Windows 10 (Version 1709 or later)

So I decided to try all of them assuming that the wrong one will just not detect the device.

So I started with the first firmware update for Azurewave/AM-8GF56BB-A and it failed at 84% or 85%.

Okay, then I moved to Bison/BNGL19VB2. Installer displayed a message, that Realtek camera not found!

Great, I finally moved to Chicony/CKFIH30 and firmware 100% and successfully uploaded.

I didn't try camera before that, but I found that my camera became not working after that!

Symptoms are: the flash turns on and there is no image from the camera.

Completely black Camera app windows and also no image in Skype.

I checked everything! Every suggestion I found through this forum!

  • Camera privacy was enabled.
  • Skype and built-in Camera app had access turned on in Camera privacy.
  • The camera cover was open and camera device was enabled in BIOS.

At this step I had thought that I've got a faulty camera.

The problem is that both Azurewave/AM-8GF56BB-A and Chicony/CKFIH30 firmware can be successfully uploaded!

And camera is not working with Chicony/CKFIH30 and works ONLY with Azurewave/AM-8GF56BB-A.

Except above symptoms of non-working camera there is also another one.

If you open Device Manager you will notice that the list of devices is periodically refreshing by itself.

Also if you open Camera device properties (WIN+X -> Device Manager -> Cameras -> Integrated Camera -> Details tab. Select Hardware Ids from the Property list)

you will see the following Hardware Id (assuming you uploaded Chicony/CKFIH30 firmware):

USBVID_04F2&PID_B61E&MI_00

This is WRONG firmware!

Finally, I was close to give up and tried to apply another two firmware again!

So firmware package for Bison/BNGL19VB2 again displayed a message, that Realtek camera not found!

But, surprisingly, firmware for Azurewave/AM-8GF56BB-A this time ended up with success and 100% upload!

And I tried camera and IT WORKED!!!!

After I uploaded Azurewave/AM-8GF56BB-A firmware, Device Manager stopped refreshing by itself and here is the exact Hardware Ids:

USBVID_13D3&PID_56BB&REV_1903&MI_00

USBVID_13D3&PID_56BB&MI_00

(WIN+X -> Device Manager -> Cameras -> Integrated Camera -> Details tab. Select Hardware Ids from the Property list)

I also installed the above driver and here is what Driver Details shows:

Sonix

2/4/2020

10.13.18362.18

So the issue with my camera was that a wrong firmware was applied to the camera.

After I re-fleshed firmware from Azurewave/AM-8GF56BB-A camera is working again!

Hope this help you!

Make your Camera Great Again! :)

Hello! Thanks a lot for sharing this information!

I believe I'm having exactly the same problem however, there's no way to install the Azuwave firmware... It only accepts the Chiconi unfortunately.

Hope Customer Support has a solution for this. Cheers.

Thank you very much alexcee. You saved my life with your beautiful post. I spent 12 hours debugging and reinstalling Windows before stumbling on your post.
