X1 Carbon 7th gen - very low volume of external microphone

2019-10-11, 10:25 AM

External microphone plugged into the audio port gives out very low volume. Without boost there is practically no sound, with +20dB boost the sound level is around -40 dB. The built-in microphone array works well, HD audio 2nd output is fine as well.

Windows 10 1809, Audio Driver Version 6.0.8750.3, UI version 1.3.185.0. Tested with two different sets of earbuds+microphone, same outcome.

Please advise.

Hi Billyj! Have you tried using the external microphone to other devices? If yes, does the problem still occur? And also, have you tried using a known good external microphone? The driver doesn't seem to have a problem since it works fine with other headphones.

Yes, both headphone+mic sets work fine with other devices, including an X1C3 and a mobile phone.

I find it incredibly frustrating that things like the external microphone or LTE do not work well.

Experimenting with the device, a reinstall of the system, proving failure to Lenovo to get the hardware exchanged is extremely time consuming.

What can one do? I have a 3 year full upgraded warranty on the device. Should I really put Lenovo through the pain of replacing the motherboard or the entire device?

Bill

As per the user guide manual, the microphone is located near the webcam. You can refer to this link: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/x1yoga_x1carbon_ug_v1_en.pdf. So in case a repair is needed, the motherboard won't be touched. If a reset has been made and the issue still persist, we highly suggest you to reach out to our support: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/SupportPhoneList for further assistance. Hope everything goes well for you.

Hi, Bill. Have you resolved the issue? I bought x1c gen 9 recently and am having the same problem. I tried disabling "audio enhancements" and it got better, but still doesn't compare with the performance on my other laptops.
