Re:X1 Carbon 8th Generation - Internal Microphone not recognized. Reboot fixes it temporarily

2020-08-24, 19:35 PM

Same issue here, mine only recognizes external microphones (the one from my headset)...

Also had issues with my output driver, which causes the sound to disappear... Uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling other ones work, but this solution is not viable as every time I have a Windows Update, it updates my sound drivers...

What version of Windows 10 are you using? There have been audio issues with the recent update.

Did you try this, mentioned in the thread?

My Windows version is 2004 (19041.450), and updating my drivers to this version makes my sound disappear (both the speakers as well as with my headset)

given that I have more than a little experience with applications having to keep up with operating system updates inside a different industry, by access to early OS builds etc, unless the OS update includes plain bad code, the big dog wins, so the hardware or application developer needs to update their drivers or applications to keep pace with the OS. There is no suggestion that either party has broken something, but Lenovo does seem to have failed to keep their drivers in line with this OS update. Just a comment from a company rep that the issue was recognized and was in work would reassure us. So having seen a Mod engage (Thank you!), does he have a hotline to the relevant company person?

Couldn't agree more, would like to see at least a message from Lenovo saying that they recognize this issue; and that it will be fixed later on.

I also have this problem with a brand new X1 Yoga Gen 5 (basically same hardware as X1 Carbon Gen 8). It appears that the Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) OED driver in the device manager receives an unhanded message id 43. If you look in the device manager you can see that the OED driver has a warning. If you disable and re-enable this driver the mic will be re-detected without a restart. I've had it freeze the machine once, so warning on that, save first, but it usually works.

That all said, this is unacceptable. In this remote work era, grounds for returning the laptop.  I like the machine otherwise but this is such a critical issue.  We got this machine to help my wife teach her classes remotely this year.

It looks like the blame might rest more on Intel, but since Lenovo controls the drivers for laptops, they need to fix it.

Yeah have the same issue too. Really not a good look on such a high end laptop, I hope Lenovo will address the issue soon.

In my case, the microphone does not show up in the Windows device manager, if that helps at all. And as people have said, a reboot usually 'solves' the issue. However, I just did a reboot and the microphone is still not detected.

@fibSeq Even with a reboot the microphone is still not detected as far as I'm concerned (+ the latest Realtek drivers cause my audio to disappear, so it seems all connected in some weird way)
