X1 Carbon G9 does not detect monitor via USB-C

2021-07-15, 20:16 PM

Hi,

I have a new X1 Carbon G9 (20XW005VSP) and a new LG 35WN75C-B.

My problem is that the laptop does not detect the monitor via USB-C. It does work via HDMI though. I understand that both devices are in general capable of a connection via USB-C. I use the cable that was delivered together with the monitor. I updated via Windows updates as well as Lenovo Vantage. The computer charges when connected to the monitor via USB-C and the monitor recognizes that an external input was connected but the computer does not detect the monitor, not in the device manager, neither in the Thunderbolt Control Center.

Any idea what could be wrong?

I tried to look for answers but did not find a solution.

Just as an update:

In the end it seems to be the screen itself. I bought a new Thunderbolt 4 cable and it also doesn't work.

After some time I found somebody with a working USB-C monitor and my computer detects that display with both cables - the new one and the one delivered by LG.

I will contact LG to exchange the monitor.

Thanks for the help!

May I ask your cable is Type C switch Type C to connect to monitor? Or you used Type C dongle to connect with notebook, then used HDMI cable to plug in Type C dongle? thanks.

It is a USB-C to USB-C cable, no dongle used.

Maybe the information helps that I can connect a USB-A device to the port of the monitor and the computer recognizes it.

I tried now also with a dongle. USB-C in the computer to HDMI to (another) monitor, and USB-C to DVI. These both work.

Things to try: 1. Another USB-C cable. 2: Emergency reset (small button in pinhole on bottom) often clears up interface issues.
USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

Thanks!I also tried now the dongle with the LG monitor. It works with the dongle on the computer and HDMI to the screen. But it doesn't work when I connect the dongle to the monitor and the HDMI to the laptop. Is this supposed to work?

I tried the emergency reset, that didn't help.

I don't have another USB-C cable. Is there something I need to watch out for when buying a new one?

Use a good USB-C to USB-C cable approved for DisplayPort and power delivery, from a reputable vendor. I use my X1C6 every day with and LG monitor and USB-C, and the only problem I ever had was isolated to the USB-C cable which LG supplied with the monitor :-s. I replaced it.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.
