X1 Carbon Gen 2 Plugged in and not chargin, however battery not fully charged

2015-08-22, 12:05 PM

I have a problem that my battery started couple of months ago only to charge to random percentages, i.e. 45%, 60%, 70%.... etc.... with the famous 'plugged in not charging'.

It is Lenovo Gen 2, around 15 months, and battery wear is at 23.3%.

All tests show battery running normally.

Any suggestions what may cause the battery to stop charging at random percentages? anything I can do to fix?

thanks in advance.

try this out...

best regards..

Microsoft .NET Framework version 4.0 or above is required for System Update to work correctly. Use Microsoft Windows Update to ensure that Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 is installed on your system.

Thanks for your reply, but must admit I am a bit puzzled. First of all, apologies if I didn't make it clear - the problem with battery stopping to charge at random percentages started several months ago with Win 8.1.  I have meanwhile upgraded to Win 10 and it did not stop.

I see that you are pointing me to the ThinkVantageSystemUpdate page - not sure how that would solve the problem, since I (suppose) my regular Lenovo System Update (through Lenovo Solutions Center) works fine and shows that the machine is up to date.

What is the difference between LSC update and ThinkVantageUpdate?? I see that the page you referred to dates back to May, i.e. before Win 10 was launched?

How do I get/why do I need Microsoft .net framework 4.0 - it does not come with regular Win 10 update.

Can you pls explain a bit more - appreciate it.

mikimedic,

is Lenovo Companion installed on the laptop?
It could show battery charge cycle count. This parameter is very important for the battery health.

yes, Lenovo Companion is installed, and shows 633 battery cycles. Capacity as 34 Wh. The new battery was 45 Wh some 15 months ago.

Thanks!

Oh, that value says the battery is almost dead.

Under win7 and Lenovo Power Manager you could reset (gauge) the battery. But this condition (the number of cycles) means it'd be a temporary solution any way.

So, try to get a new battery.

Thanks for your advice. Ok, admittedly the cycle count may seem to high, but is 34 Wh still left after 15 months of use not good? All battery tests (Lenovo software) show that battery is good. Tried calibration as well and didn't help.  When it charges to full 100% (of 34Wh) I still get a decent 3-4 hours of normal use.

So is it really time to replace it? I then will probably look stupid to myself since that condition has been for the last six months, and battery warranty just expired. Do you think that Lenovo would consider this under warranty. ??

Another problem is that it is X1 carbon Gen 2, and I am in Switzerland. I cannot obviously buy and replace it myself. Does anyone have any experience how does Lenovo deal with battery replacement requests, and how long does it take - in any country? What is a for example US price of a battery replacement?

Many thanks.

x1c gen2 laptop has internal battery with 45Wh capacity. Of course, you might use existant battery, 1-2 months. And get laptop with broken battery unexpectedly.

The warranty for ThinkPads batteries is 1 year.

Battery replacement is shown in the manual below:

There is also service video:

Thanks!!! this is really helpfull and fully appreciate.

Just to be sure - if I do the battery replacement myself (after purchasing a new genuine Lenovo battery, of course), hope it does not violate my main Lenovo 3 year warranty?

There is some trouble.

Have a look at the HMM above, for the "CRU" (Customer Replaceable Unit) statement. Internal battery isn't the CRU.

So, to keep the warranty for the laptop and battery you should contact Lenovo authorized service provider, to purchase and install it. I can't imagine the final price.

The reasoning about self replacement and warranty seems a "thin" one enough.
