X1 Carbon Gen 9 + Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 Dock Craziness

2021-06-21, 19:58 PM

Brand new X1 with a brand new thunderbolt 3 gen 2 dock.

1. Monitors go to sleep (2 over displayport, one over hdmi), ethernet connection on dock drops

2. when they do, X1 locks the screen

3. This happens after about 30 seconds of idle time.

4. Monitors randomly flicker on and off or go all staticky when not idle

I tried an HP usb-c dock instead. Same exact thing. 30 seconds of idle time, monitors go dark, press a key, monitors wake up, looking at login screen.

It seems to me that the X1 is losing connection to the dock and that also for some reason causes the machine to lock itself.

So frustrating.

I've updated firmware, drivers, used both thunderbolt ports, with and without separate laptop power supply for power etc. etc.

X1 is set to never sleep on or off battery. Group policy has idle screen lockout time of 20 minutes.

Does your machine have HPD (human presence detection)?  If so, is it turned ON or OFF.  Controls are in BIOS or Commercial Vantage.

Wow thanks. I had no idea. Now I can't get the x1 to recognize the dock as thunderbolt. 😡

Enable the docking station:

To enable the dock when connected to the computer for the first time, do either of the following:

Confirm the change when prompted if you have Administrator privilege, OR

Enter the ThinkPad Setup program (BIOS):
[Config]>>[Thunderbolt]>>[Security]>>[No_Security]
ie: Set "NO SECURITY" for Thunderbolt in BIOS

And then reboot.

Now all Thunderbolt USB devices are recognized.

It was working fine before I connected a usb-c hp docking station.

Now when I plug it in it only recognizes and loads the driver for audio and the ethernet port. It seems its connecting over usb-c and not thunderbolt.

thunderbolt control center ports 1 and 2 show nothing when i connect it to either port.
