X1 Carbon Gen3 (2015) Chassis constantly clicks in and out of position

2015-04-21, 20:35 PM

It's been 1 week since I received my first Lenovo Laptop - X1 Carbon Gen3 and I'm very pleased with it so far.

Since the beginning I noticed a 'clicking' sound produced when resting my palms on the keyboard to type, but couldn't figured out what it was.

Today I took a closer look and discovered that the bottom chassis (front corners) is being pushed in and out its position, creating this 'clicking sound'.  It almost looks like the screws were not properly tightend so they do not allow any flex between the bottom chassis and the body of the ultrabook.  I tried tightening the screws, but it seems like they are fully tightened, so there isnt anything I can do about it.

I performed a research and found one more user complaining about the same issue here:

http://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/30a5rz/i_have_a_touch_and_a_nontouch_qhd_x1_carbon_3rd/

I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this issue and how its best resolved.

Many thanks,

Chris

You could try filing down the length of the screws, or inserting something that functions like a washer between the head of the screw and baseplate. Careful though, too many attempts to fix the problem may end up stripping the screw hole.

I got the same problem with gen 2. Other people have this problem too. I sent for repair. It helps a bit. But it is still there. It is kind of annoying.

Thanks for your replies,

I honestly do not understand why Lenovo has gone into so much thinking and engineering to produce this excellent ultrabook, but failed to see something so obvious - unless of course the gap/spacing between botom screws and the chassis is like that by design.

If the GEN2 has the same problems, then I really must assume its a design 'feature';

I've purchased mine from Australia but am currently in Greece, so I'd hate to get support involved at the moment. Perhaps when I move back to Australia I can call them and ask.. but for now I just wanted to know if others are having the same problem or if it was just me.

Thanks,

chris.

I have the same problem (hope to soon being able to say "I HAVE HAD that problem"...)

I was very, very disappointed and very annoyed to see that this overly expensive business laptop which I paid +3K USD for not (even) had the same build quality as a simple Macbook consumer laptop, therefore a couple of days ago I sent my X1 gen3 for repair to fix the squeeking and flexinq bottom cover, and hopefully the Lenovo repair center has swapped either the bottom cover or the screws.

I must say that it is really embarrasing for Lenovo to charge a premium for a Laptop with such a lousy bottom cover fit..

I mean, honestly, where is the quality control...?

Anyway, as soon as I get it back after the weekend I will post an update about the results of the repair.

I got my gen2  bottom cover replaced. It is worst. I haven't used it since getting it back as the result.

Hi returpost,

Have you by any chance received your X1 Gen3 back from repair? Can you update us on the results?

I'll be returning back to Australia in a few days and will be opening a case with them - I'll update once I too have some news.

Thanks

Chris.
