X1 Carbon Model 3443 SSD interface? (mSATA, M.2, etc)

2015-02-24, 2:52 AM

Does anyone know what interface is used with the X1 Carbon Model 3443 SSD? (mSATA, M.2, etc)

Long story short, my motherboard fried and I need to retrieve my data. But my SSD didn't fit into a mSATA adapter I bought. Googling and calling tech support haven't helped either. :(

It's this one: http://www.thessdreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/SSD-First-Look.jpg

FRU: 45N8297

52-pin, 2.5" drive

I really need my data! Any help would be extremely appreciated.

IIRC that vintage of X1 used a proprietary Sandisk SSD.  I haven't tried it but this adapter may work:

neither m.2, nor msata. Gen1 uses the regular SanDisk x100 drive in the proprietary Small Form Factor (SFF).

The first generation X1 Carbon SSD uses a proprietary interface.  It's standard SATA signalling, but with a small form factor connector, sometimes called SanDisk 20+6..  The second and third generations use mSATA and M.2 cards (I forget which order.)

You can get adapter cards on Amazon to convert from the 20+6 form factor SSD to standard SATA (so you can read the data off your 1st-gen SSD), and different adapter cards to convert from mSATA or M.2 SSD to 20+6 (so you can use a newer SSD in your 1st-gen X1 laptop.)  Some of the vendors are "Sintech" and "Micro SATA Cables", prices from about $11-30 (the cheaper ones only ship from China, which takes longer, but look like the same board.)

I haven't tried it yet (my board is supposed to arrive next week), but they get good reviews saying people could read their data or use the SSD in their laptop.
