It's usually Chrome taking up all of the resources. AVG Software Analyzer sometimes comes and goes rapidly. Then there's the system task which is also what I see. Chrome and System is at the top when it spikes.
I found a couple notebooks for sale, a T460P with 16GB of ram ($1400) and a used T460S with 8GB ($750). I can save quite a bit of money if I go down to the T440P/S but they're a little too bulky for me. Initially, I wanted the X1 Carbon 3/4th gen with 8GB of memory but I'm worried about running in to the same problems! I think the T460S is a good deal at $750 but I'm worried now about the memory.

That is a good idea, I think the T460S is a good solution then, I can upgrade the memory to 16GB. I checked crucial and the machine supports up to 20GB!
