X1 Carbon Touch Backlit keyboard not working

For some reason, I cannot get the backlit keyboard to work on my new X1 Carbon Touch.  It lights up upon powering up and then will not turn on no matter how many times I hit the space bar.  I don't see an option to enable/disable anywhere either.  Am I missing a driver?  Thanks in advance.

Re: X1 Carbon Touch Backlit keyboard not working

Hi, architect7

Be sure to hold the Fn key while pressing the Spacebar to turn on the backlit keyboard. If you have already tried this to no avail, then I would recommend checking some BIOS settings. To enter BIOS, reboot the machine. When it is powering back up and you see the Lenovo splash screen, tap the Enter key repeatedly. A menu should appear. When it does, press F1 to enter BIOS. Once here, navigate to Config ► Keyboard/Mouse and check the settings of Fn and Ctrl Key swap and Fn Key Lock. For purposes of this test, make sure they are both set to Disabled. Once done, press F10 to save and exit. The machine should now boot normally. Log in to Windows and try to activate the backlight again and see if that works.

Best of luck,

Adam

Re: X1 Carbon Touch Backlit keyboard not working

My keyboard backlight does not seem to work, and I don't recall it has ever worked.

I tried checking the bios settings, and they were set as you indicated they should be.

I can use the FN key with other function keys, and they work.  When I hit FN and spacebar together, I can toggle between the 3 setting of backlighting (I see the icons on the screen), but there is no effect on the actual backlighting of the keyboard...

I run Win 7 Prof 64 bit.

Any other ideas?  thanks

Re: X1 Carbon Touch Backlit keyboard not working

Hi, bnchmmnd

Have you done all updates (including drivers) on your system? If not, they can all be found here

If all updates have been performed and the Fn key works with other functions, but not the keyboard (save the icon appearing on the screen,) then I would guess that your issue is hardware in nature. You may wish to call Lenovo Support at 1-800-426-7378 and telling them of the issue to see if you can get the keyboard replaced.

Hope it helps,

Adam

Re: X1 Carbon Touch Backlit keyboard not working

My Backlit used to work when I got the Laptop but since few days it only works while booting.

I tried the steps but on the new X1 carbon touch there is no Fn and Ctrl option when I go to Bios>Config>Keyboard/Mouse.

Is this different in the new model maybe?

Yes it is. On the X1C2 you have to cycle the Fn key to get to the row of F keys (or touch the Fn key for a couple of seconds until the F key row appears), then touch the second icon from the right that looks like half a star. This now cycles through the keyboard backlighting modes every time you touch the icon.

Added: This new procedure is fully described in the Adaptive Keys, Gestures and Voice booklet that was included in the X1C2 documentation packet. Here's an image of the icon I meant above (second from right.)

Re: X1 Carbon Touch Backlit keyboard not working

Thanks so much!  Was afraid to deal with the BIOS etc., so your simpler and effective solution was greatly welcomed.  After a year with this computer, I now have a lighted keyboard!
