X1 Carbon: Won't boot. Powers on to a solid white screen.

One of my users just brought his X1 carbon in for me to look at.  When powered on, it comes up to a solid white screen.  The wireless radio light is on, and I see the HDD light flicker a couple of times, very briefly.

I have tried holding the power button in to power it off and bring it back up, pressing the reset button, and also holding the reset button for 10-15 seconds.  None of these made a difference, the lcd still displays a blank white screen when I turn the laptop back on.

Before I put in a support ticket and send it off to service, is there anything else I should try?

Re: X1 Carbon: Won't boot. Powers on to a solid white screen.

Hi, swhitcher

For clarification: Does the computer go to a white screen immediately, or only when it is booting Windows, i.e., can you see the BIOS or any screens at all? My first recommendation with issues like this is to boot into Safe Mode, but if you can see nothing but a white screen, troubleshooting steps will be vastly different.

Best,

Adam

Immediate.  As soon as it's turned on, the screen comes on completely white, and never changes.

I expect it will have to be sent in for service, but figured itw as worth asking here first.

Hi, swhitcher

This could be a myriad of issues, but you could try hooking up an external monitor to the machine and see if the image is cloned/extended. This may be able to tell you which piece of hardware is acting up.

Best,

Adam

I don't believe we've got a cable for the mini display port connector on this laptop.  At this point, I'll just go ahead and send it out for service.  Thanks.

Re: X1 Carbon: Won't boot. Powers on to a solid white screen.

I have same issue yesterday! When the X1 carbon was in booting process, the screen went to totally white and very bright, soon after flashes couple times, connect to my USB dock station, I could see a extended screen, but when I tried to change to display setting to duplicate the main to back up my document, it went to black. I tried couple times, then gave up. I believe video chips for some reason has failed! I phoned in today, been told there will be a box send to me.

I was so impressed by the video the engineer thrown the X1 carbon from a lift and it insists working.

My piece of chunk Dell have been served us for 5 years flawlessly and counting. but X1 carbon just 5 month.

My daughter lost all her project and class notes.

How could I say love to Thinkpad?

Re: X1 Carbon: Won't boot. Powers on to a solid white screen.

Have the same issues ... tried the following actions with no success

1) Press the power key for more than 4 sec...

2) Press the reset button at the bottom of the machine

3) Connect to an external display

4) Try different combination of having and without the power adapter connected

The Control-Alt-Del combination (which turn off the machine) and the Fn-Display+/- seems to be responsing.  Pluggin an external mouse will trigger the SSD to flash for 2-3 times...  Hope this info help.

Got repaired by Lenovo Service Centre.  Hardware problem with VGA cable.
X1C touch is now up and running.  And I am a happy Lenovo user again Smiley Happy

Re: X1 Carbon: Won't boot. Powers on to a solid white screen.

I had the same problem this Wednesday (4/10). I bought the laptop a month ago, tried all the recommended options, and the screen remained white. I have a business trip coming up this Sunday, and I was panicking because this was my only laptop. Luckily, the Lenovo Customer Service provided me the address of a nearby Lenovo Warranty Store (First Equipment Company in Addison, Texas). I took it to the store yesterday (4/11) at 9 a.m., the Vice President took my order, kept me updated on the status of the laptop, ordered the parts that night, and fixed the laptop by 2 p.m. today  (it would've been before 11 a.m. if it wasn't for some password confusion).

Moral of the story: Hopefully, your nearby Lenovo Warranty Store is as badass as mine.
