X1 Carbon - failing to update BIOS

Dear all,

I have a 20BS with a very old piece of BIOS installed [ N14ET05W (0.05) dated 2014-01-31].

I have been trying to apply all versions of BIOS listed in

     http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-...

in vain . . . as BIOS update software (both Windows version and CD-ROM version) fails to verify secured flash image.

I would appreciate it very much if you kindly suggest any solution.

P.S.

The BIOS installed on my X1 Carbon is NOT listed . . .

Re: X1 Carbon (2nd Generation) - failing to update BIOS

Hi

Please, specify, the real lapop model. Machine-Type 20BS belongs the 3rd generation of x1c.

Anyway, do you have laptop engineering sample?

Re: X1 Carbon (2nd Generation) - failing to update BIOS

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

20BS-SDV#7K113 . . .

BIOS N14ET05W (0.05)

Embedded Controller N14HT02W (0.02)

Machine Type Model 4810140100

Outfit is that of 2nd Generation (all function keys are touch keys and I have to type

     FN + B = Break
     FN + I = Insert
     FN + K = ScrLk
     FN + P = Pause
     FN + S = SysRq
     FN + T = PrtSc

these combinations to utilize hidden keys) but it appears that 3rd Generation system board is installed for an unknown reason.

I would like to install BIOS 1.08 or higher so that Windows 10 can be put on my X1 Carbon.

Re: X1 Carbon (2nd Generation) - failing to update BIOS

It seems laptop is a hand made model, with design and BIOS modified.

1. 20BS-SDV#7K113 - isn't a legit model, any of x1c generation
2. 20BS-SDV - google shows the only mention, on the allthatjapan. It's impossible for the Lenovo support site
3. 4810140100 isn't MTM, 20BS or any from the table in your post - should be the type

N14ETxxx - BIOS ID code, really belongs x1c gen3. But BIOS packages earlier then N14UR02W (matches N14ET25W) are not accessable on the support site. And, probably, were not.

My opinion - it's an engineering sample.

Re: X1 Carbon (2nd Generation) - failing to update BIOS

Thank you very much, again.

I would agree that this unit of X1 Carbon, which I accidentally purchased on the street, could be an engineering sample (Gen 3 hardware inside / Gen 2 casing outside).

I would put in a spare SSD in the X1 Carbon to see if Windows 10 can be installed.

Re: X1 Carbon - failing to update BIOS

1) Shut the system completely down (using the Shut Down icon on the desktop) or depress the power button for 10 seconds
2) Use a paperclip, toothpick or other small object to depress the Reset Button (you will feel a slight click) found in the hole to the bottom right of the main fan exhaust on the bottom of the system.

3) After several seconds remove the tool you used to depress the Reset Button

4) Press the power button to start the computer normally
Then try to install the bios...again..use this link for the 20BS and 20BT Carbon's..3rd Gen..

the same procedure point 1 to 4 for first and second carbon X1 Generation..and then the appropriate bios..the right bios you can find on the Lenovo support page...
The second possibility is also to find the right bios drivers.etc.with the Lenovo software...and the safest way for the beginners with little experience...etc..

Re: X1 Carbon - failing to update BIOS

Thank you very much for your kind suggestion.

I followed your instructions but BIOS update failure (ERROR 234) persists. I wonder why . . . because I have been simply running http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-... without any modification.

It appears that, unlike good old fptw64.exe, winflash64.exe does not have NOVERIFY option when updating flash. So, I will not be able to circumvent ERROR 234.

Read current BIOS.
Oem check

Re: X1 Carbon - failing to update BIOS

Fantastic hand-made laptop:
"MTM", System Unit s/n, System board s/n, Asset Tag, CPU Type (!) - everything is a fake. I'll not be surprised if MAC address is from the head.

I would agree . . . I have at last realized that anything goes in China where various parts are assembled into final products and exported to the rest of the world.

Re: X1 Carbon - failing to update BIOS

Oh no... I bought the same laptop. now i realized that what i have is also engineering sample.

thats the very reason why i could not resolve my fn key problem.

for those of you who have the same laptop, please do not update your bios. It will screw your adaptive keyboard.
