Try installing these three drivers over what you have already:

Installed all three drivers and restarted computer. Still can't adjust the brightness..

No need to reboot, here's how I solved it:

 

1) go to device manager

2) disable intel graphic card

3) re-enable intel graphic card

 

and you're ready to go

I resolved shipping the Laptop back to IBM. Was still under warranty.

It also worked for me. I purchased a refurb X1 from someone on Ebay. Ive only had it a day and this happened. I can only assume its a bad driver. Have they fixed the driver yet?

Have you looked at your Power Plan settings and checked the Adaptive Brightness settings? It's the first thing I turn off, I hate the ambient light adjustment. It's great for power savings, but I prefer bright screen.
