X1 Carbon trackpoint/touchpad freezing

2013-06-05, 11:24 AM

Greetings

First time posting seeing if anyone else is having issues with the X1 Carbon trackpoint/touchpad freezing up on Windows 8.

For me it is freezing up every 20min while I am using it, and also when I unplug the AC power.

The mouse will freeze up but the keyboard works fine. Usually I am forced to reboot.

A USB mouse will work fine during this freeze.

I have tried installing all windows updates, Lenovo updates and even system recovery to a date when I didn't have issues but nothing seems to work.

Anyone else have this issue?

Its been very frustrating owning this x1, as I am on my second one after the first one died on me.

Hi, changuri

I would recommend trying to install the Synaptics base driver and see if that helps your issues. Synaptics is the company that produces the UltraNav driver for Lenovo, so there should not be any loss of functionality, but it tends to fix issues like this in my experience. This driver can be found here. Try downloading and installing that and see if it helps.

Best of luck,

Adam

It happens very frequently with my X1 carbon as well, more or less every 30 mins or so.

The IT re-installed all the drivers and even the BIOS. It hasn't solved the problem

I used to reboot to activate the touch pad., but found a slightly less painful way., just put it in sleep mode and bring it back, the touch pad becomes active

Any permamnt fix would be greatly appreciated

I have had this problem on Windows 10 and also on several Linux kernel and distributions. I even replaced the touchpad with one from eBay. I think it's the motherboard or signal noise on the cabling between the touchpad and the motherboard. Mine is  a 20BS model.

The touchpad freeze is always accompanied by a message from the Linux kernel (who KNOWS what Windows says to itself when this happens - closed systems suck).

Linux keeps trying to resync so it can work around the problem. Sometimes it's successful. Sometimes I have to rmmod the psmouse driver and reinstall it, setting up X11 configuration. I have a keystroke defined to do this.

I have to say it's **bleep** annoying. I want to get rid of this piece of crap. Small bugs like this make me crazy.

Re: X1 Carbon trackpoint/touchpad freezing

so is it a software or hardware problem, or combination?

my 20A7 freezes mouse pointer, sometimes I can get it back by clicking on touchpad middle and left area, sometimes not.

it also probably linked with temperature.

anyway, each time it freezes, I can close the lid, open it up, to get to standby and back, and it works again, so I think it's either some chatter/rattle (sorry, for my English) or something else.

for instance I applied windows 10 update just a few days ago, and thing are getting worse. but mb this is just a device dying, which is strange, as I made a repair by changing to completely new keyboard+touchpad assembly, as my previous one were broken by cap of espresso. just 2 years ago, not that much.

the problem for me is that it is hard to get to this touchpad contacts, because it is opened from the bottom and need to disassembly almost completely all the notepad to get to keyboard/touchpad.

so hopefully there is another, easy solution.
