X1 Carbon with 1980x1080 6th generation

I just bought a new X1 Carbon 6th generation and hooked it up to a new LG Ultrawide Monitor. The pages to say the least on the Monitor do not look good. My laptop comes with 1980x1080 display. What I want to know is if returning it and getting a higher resolution display like 2560x1440 will make a difference on the external monitor or if I could just buy an external EGPU and hook that up to get higher resolution display on my external ultrawide monitor? The xternal monitor is a LG38UC99 Monitor. That monitor  has a 21:9 Display. I tried hooking it up with both HDMI and with USB C cable and both look bad on external monitor. What I need to use external monitor for is opening up 3 seperate windows for stock trading.

Re: X1 Carbon with 1980x1080 6th generation

Hi Expatmark,

The X1 Carbon 6th Gen can drive that monitor (from the PSREF: Max resolution: 5120x2880@60Hz (USB Type-C); 4096x2160@30Hz (HDMI)). The rest is up to whatever you have the Windows 10 resolution and scaling set at for that monitor.

Agreed. Sounds like a resolution and scaling adjustment that's required for the external monitor.

Re: X1 Carbon with 1980x1080 6th generation

In the Windows settings the external monitor only shows 1920x1080. Anyone here know how to fix or resolve his issue. The screen resolution on this monitor is 3840x1600 but I am noy getting this with the winodws tabs that i open up and drag to the monitor. When I right clock on the monitor to get to Display settings I can see Scale and layout which is at the reccommended 150% layout then under custom scaling the highest resolution setting I can see is 1920-1080 (recommended) and under Multiple settings the display is set to extend these displays.

Re: X1 Carbon with 1980x1080 6th generation

Also, when I close the lid on my monitor the LG display automatically also goes to sleep mode which is fine but then all the windows/tabs I had open get sent back to my Thinkpad and when I lift the monitor lid open again all the windows and tabs are now scattered on my Thinkpad and nothing is on the external monitor. I then have to drag ach one back to the monitor again manually. The worst part is that I could not find a way to where it can automatically scale and fit 3 windows tabs on the ultrawide monitor. Apparently there is a way to do this or some sort of shortcut. Anyone here know how?

I found this online

Under Multiple Displays, is it set to Duplicate? If so then the resolution of the external monitor will be 1920x1080, the same as that of your X1 Carbon. Try Extend.

Also, do you have the LG monitor driver installed?

I did not install any drivers. Will look to see if there is one to download. If you could help with it would be great.

I found link for driver and installed it but after I installed it I do not see anything under display settings that changed.

Re: X1 Carbon with 1980x1080 6th generation

Got the extended to work now. Still a few bugs left to work out. 1) I still keep getting caution/error sign to use supplied input cables. 2) I still lose all windows/tabs from monitr whenI close lid on my X1 after closing lid and opening it back up 3) Still can not find a way to place all 3 windows equally on monitor.
