X1 Extreme 2nd Gen Thunderbolt 3 issues

2020-11-25, 15:15 PM

Dear Lenovo,

I'm a CTO in an IT-technology company. And I bought a very expensive laptop. Maybe one of the most expensive in the world. And I did expect flawless work from it.

I spent a month investigating the issues and I hope you apply your attention and efforts at least the way I did to fix them.

Please, read my investigation report thoroughly.

I use
Lenovo X1 Extreme 2nd Gen (
Product number : 20QV00CERT, Bios version : N2OET48W 1.35) Laptop (ThinkPad)
with
Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2.

All the product are original, registered, use only original cables and on the latest drivers provided by Lenovo Vantage.

But issues are definitely related to the laptop Thunderbolt 3 rather than to the doc station.

Here are they.

  1. Monitors turns on/turn off spontaneously during the day (could be workarounded by Doc switching off/switching on).
  2. Image refresh rate drops significantly (could be workarounded by opening laptop lid).
  3. Monitor image suddenly turns to noisy image (could be workarounded by Doc switching off/switching on).

Dock Firmware version: 3.1.67 (Latest available).

I spent a month and infinite combinations of hardware to identify the issue: two laptops, 4 different monitors, 10 HDMI and Display ports cables and even 3 different Thunderbolt doc stations (original Lenovo, LG monitor native and WavLink). The result - issues depend on only the X1 Extreme laptop itself.

I assume it could be related to Thunderbolt power management. I did full reset of PC and BIOS but the issues still exist.

I also tried X1 Yoga 2nd Gen Laptop (ThinkPad) - Type 20JF - and issues don't reproduce with it at all.

I found a thread on Lenovo forums about similar issues in other models: Critical Intel Thunderbolt Software and Firmware Updates. But there is no a solution for X1 Extreme Gen2.

Please, help.

I'm ready to provide any additional information you need to investigate the issue.

Regards,

Yuriy

The TB3 Dock has many issues - I am also an IT Leader with 20+ years.  I've narrowed the issue to an interplay between the onboard TB controller on my Carbon X1 6th Gen and the Gen 2 Dock.  X1 Carbon 6th Gen & Thunderbolt 3 Gen2 Dock - Garbled Audio/WebCam-English Community (lenovo.com)

Kindly let me know if you find a solution.  My workaround is to bypass the dock for WebCam/Audio..... the other peripherals seem to work OK in my case.  Reproduced on co-workers laptops of similar model.

BTW - Gen 1 dock of the same make/model works fine.  I have multiple units of both Gen 1 and Gen 2 dock as well as 100's of Lenovo Laptops to test with (not tested them all though!)

Sorry to hear that. I found a solution for WebCam on the Lenovo forums - you have to disable CPU Power Management in BIOS. Other issues are reported here partially but no solution is provided. I'm sure (and I can prove it) that the real reason is in Thunderbolt 3 (either firmware or the chip itself). TB3 Dock works quite smooth on e.g. X1 Carbon, but it's completely mess with X1 Extreme - one of the most expensive Lenovo Laptop ($4 000+).

Re:X1 Extreme 2nd Gen Thunderbolt 3 issues

I have the same issues using the Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen2 (40AN) alongside my X1 Extreme Gen2.

I constantly get issues with my monitors turning off, only to fix it by unplugging the dock's power cord and plugging it back in.

I also have the same noisy image, its rare, but it randomly happens. I have to reconnect the DP cable going to the monitor to fix.

For the choppy framerate issue, it was fixed by setting the Discrete GPU only in the BIOS. I originally did it because of the full brightness bug in the Intel drivers, but it also fixed the issue of choppy framerates on external monitors. I am able to use the Laptop docked with the lid closed.

Thank you for workaround with choppy image! Will try it later.

But it's still just a temporary solution. These issues are especially awful during conf-calls. :-(

Lenovo! Please, pay attentions for these issues!

Dear customer,

For X1 Extreme 2nd Gen and P1 Gen2, TBT3 Workstation dock is recommended for better compatibility.

And recently there is a update of BIOS/EC (N2OET49W), could try it to see if issue still exists?

Best,

Dear lenovo specialist,

Please read my original post thoroughly.

I do use the latest original and recommended TBT3 doc station (Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 with the latest firmware).

I do use the latest BIOS update (N2OET49W 1.36).

I do use original and robust cables for displays.

The issue with displays turning off still persists.

This issue is extremely annoying. And it means that actually the main feature of the recommended doc station doesn't work.

Please, escalate it to Lenovo engineers. There are many X1 Extreme customers on the forum suffering of this issue.

I found in following page it says the dock only support 65W system.

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd500265-thinkpad-thunderbolt-3-dock-gen-2-overview-and-sevice-parts

While X1E2 seems a 135W or 170W system, maybe it is the power compatibility issue?

Of course, it's not. :-)

The article says "...UHD display, and 65W power to both Thunderbolt™...". It's about only power through Thunderbolt.

ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 has special cable to transfer external power for X1 Extreme. And they are declared as totally compatible devices.

The total power of the dock is 230 W! Not 65W.

PS: There are several posts on the forum with the same issue. Unfortunately, Lenovo constantly ignores them. And I start to think that it is intentionally.

I think there are TBT3 dock gen2 and TBT workstation dock gen2, two different docks. Only workstation dock supports 170 or 230W.

But they share same user guide which I am confused. https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/options/thinkpad_thunderbolt3_ug_en_201812.pdf

If it is TBT3 dock gen2, only one type-c cable is provided as previous link shows. No other special cables.

Which do you use?
