X1 Extreme - External screen disconnecting

I just started having issues AGAIN with my X1 Extreme and Thunderbolt dock (40AN workstation model).  I had issues in the past with a first gen Thunderbolt dock that stopped working.  I had to switch to the 40AN with 230w+65w connections and it has run fine until this past week.  I have an 34" Ultrawide Samsung CF791.

The issue is the screen goes black and shows disconnected in the middle of working.  It also now does not come up when i start up the system. Cycling the dock cable restores the connectivity.

I've updated bios and updates to the system yesterday.  Not aware of any new dock drivers.  It's a shame this laptop & dock have been plagued with issues since I got it.  I came from W540, W541, and T580 series systems without issues.  This model seems awesome but runs like a lemon.

Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

Re: X1 Extreme - External screen disconnecting

I have a very similar setup:

  • X1E 20MF000CUS with BIOS V1.22 (which was later recalled)
  • Dock 40AN0230US with firmware V3.1.61
  • Two Acer B326HK 4K 60Hz connected to the dock DP ports
  • Disabled the Intel GPU in the X1E BIOS
  • Clean Windows 10 Pro V1903 Install
  • Thunderbolt drivers V1.41.645.0 (DCH version)
  • nVidia drivers V430.86 (DCH version)

Everything has been working flawlessly. I'm actually amazed how stable it is. I rarely reboot the systems, it's on 24x7 and it always goes to sleep and wakes up correctly.

One thing though, I noticed the dock getting rather hot after continuous use, so I put a little fan close by to cool it down a bit.

Re: X1 Extreme - External screen disconnecting

Are you saying your screens are randomly going out now too? Or that they were and stopped when you put a fan on the docking station?

Re: X1 Extreme - External screen disconnecting

I apologize for not being very clear.

No, my system was always pretty stable. I was initially experiencing random wake up issues where the external screens wouldn't turn on, but that has been fixed with recent BIOS updates.

I just put a fan as a preventive measure and hopefully to extend the dock life.
