X1 Extreme Gen 1 - Constant Freeizing and Scrambled Display [UPDATE 2: semi-working now]

2019-12-23, 19:06 PM

...quite ironic that shortly after my warranty coverage expires, I have some serious issues with my X1 Extreme. It is now totally unsable.

The laptop freezes after about 5 minutes of use and thats typically followed by a blacked out display that then becomes all grabled. When the laptop is frozen, I get no input response (mouse, keyboard, etc), however pressing the function key and turning on/off keyboard backlight, volume, mic, etc. does work.

I am pretty sure I am up to date on the Windows updates as well as any updates Vantage brought up. I tried today, but it freezes when trying to complete a system scan in Vantage.

Is there anything I can check to see why this is happening in windows logs or something? Any suggestions on what I can do here? I have a very expensive unusable laptop and i'm livid... :(

Hi flyte! Try booting to BIOS to check if the issue is still present. You can follow the steps here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht500222. If the issue is still present, the issue is more likely a hardware problem. We highly suggest you reach out to our support: 800-426-7378 for repair options. You may also bring it to any of our authorized repair centers: http://lenovo.force.com/bplocator or any local store to identify which part needs to be replaced. Use the part number in buying the part locally or online. You can get the part number of the part that needs to be replaced here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup, provide the serial number or exact model. Should you wish to install it on your end, you can use this link: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht505031 as a guide in replacing the part. This option will reduce your repair expenses.

Following @

and now I can at least boot up my laptop and it stays alive for a while now. This leads me to think perhaps the constant freezing and garbled display is all heat and thermal related. Is there a way I can confirm somehow, (Windows event log or something?) I have always undervolted -1.35mV, and my power mode has always been on "Better Performance". Further, I have re-pasted a long while ago with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.. I am not sure what else I could have done to reduce heat?

I feel that since the last major Windows update to 1909 and BIOS update to 1.25, the X1 has been running typically hotter. I would like to perhaps get TPFan Control working so I can get the fans to kick in a littler earlier, but everything I read suggests that it doesn't work so well with both fans.

I would welcome any further suggestions to confirm any of this. I feel that I have totally nerfed this machine to let me get it to work!

Review my post and watch the vids. There's a 6th one on youtube in which I setup a GoPro to catch the freeze happeing. Backlit keyboard still works. Seem similar?

Hi patg84 - thanks for the reply.

What post and video are you referring to? Can you provide link? Did you ever find a resolution to you issue?

I'm sorry I thought I posted the link.

Here's the link to my issue on the lenovo forums:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Extreme-Gen-2-4K-UHD-Freezing-amp-Screen-Artifacts-Dead-GPU/td-p/4595642

Here are the 6 videos I've captured thus far:

https://youtu.be/WfJPXcW8m3k

https://youtu.be/NyIoiWzoUZc

https://youtu.be/K8ab4vJLWTA

https://youtu.be/t0GlEj6Zlyw

https://youtu.be/o3VvJ7jQebI

https://youtu.be/4cLmZll0OjI

They pretty much go in order and there's a description for each under the video.

I can't edit the original post but this is happening with the internal 630 gpu and the nvidia gpu. It's totally random but i'm still testing to see where this issue comes from.
