Re:X1 Extreme Gen 2 - Fan Constantly Runs on AC Power with BIOS 1.29

2020-11-27, 18:39 PM

New Gen 3 here, and same problem. Fans constantly on when on AC power even when I have zero load. Hard to comprehend the logic behind this change. Apart from being extremely annoying, it has to compromise the longevity of the system having a moving part component constantly operating when it's unnecessary. My 30 day return windows closes soon - unless there's a fix in the next week, this thing is going back. Too bad, as it's otherwise perfect for me. But looks like I'll be buying my first Dell.

Re:X1 Extreme Gen 2 - Fan Constantly Runs on AC Power with BIOS 1.29

2020-12-29, 20:25 PM

Just wanted to share that I had this problem resolve (semi-seemingly on its own) recently with an X1 Extreme Gen 2 (32GB RAM 1TB storage, nontouch) purchased around a year ago. However a huge caveat is that believe I have the BIOS 1.06 installed only, when I just checked at boot setup. While my perception of the problem/my configuration is incomplete I hope this is useful to someone in the google void/lenovo troubleshooting realm.

1.) Originally: didn't have fan problem but had the light issue where the screen LED could not change brightness (I believe after an auto driver/windows 10 update, not sure if triggered by Lenovo Vantage or windows)

2.) Attempt to fix light: Thunderbolt something update (I just tried updating anything critical from Lenovo Vantage). Bad idea, my computer was lapsed into an auto repair loop (automatic repair, diagnosis, and failure to launch Windows 10)..

3.) Attempt to fix auto repair loop: After exhausting BIOS setup options, I simply did a started windows from a flash drive (windows media) and this obviously allowed me to go into windows 10. Final install is Windows 10 Pro (64-bit)

4.) This new Windows 10 setup (albeit not desirable, I used this solely to fix the auto-repair loop, which most of you do not have, I basically have to re-install all previous apps, use this if you can't fix auto-repair loop in any other way) fortunately fixed the brightness issue, I was able to adjust lighting (I believe after a few minor updates from windows 10).

5.) Fan issue kicks in where it is loud whenever plugged in, and unplugged charger = normal. I simply let windows update to full and restarted a few times to due so. Its been several hours and there is no longer a plug-in fan issue. The fan appropriately gets louder when I have heavy load but does not automatically turn on loudly when plugged in.

Conclusion: There may be some configuration of windows or automatic updates that is required to fix the issue, but I am uncertain. The hopeful thing is that I had the problem and some update/restart made it go away (I will modify post if it comes back). In addition and again, I believe I have BIOS 1.06 installed instead of the aforementioned 1.29. This may make it different, but I am not sure since my computer seemed to have the same peculiar problem described in the thread. Sorry if not helpful, but hopefully someone can benefit from my log.

Chiming in here to say I have the same problem on my Gen 3. Any solutions or workarounds? X1 Gen 3, ThinkPad BIOS Update - 10 [64] - 1.11. Fan runs on AC even when no load and cool CPU temp (35 - 40 C).

I have the same problem even though I use a BIOS 1.38, I guess.

And it seems to me that noone was able to fix this, right?

So I should return the computer and buy a different one?

Sad though, the screen is very nice.

Judging from the absence of staff replies thus far, this is unfortunately probably a design choice now. :( I've been updating the BIOS, and there's been no change to the fan running while on AC power with 1.38, too. It looks like the only way to fix it would have been to stay on BIOS 1.28.

How can we contact the staff here? I mean it would really make sense to speak to the people who programm the BIOS updates. Since there was a BIOS without the problem (1.06, 1.28) it should be easily possible to make a fix for this problem, no?

I would think this is an easy fix too, but as you can see, no staff ever replied here, and it has now been over a year since I reported the issue. :( I see that you were successful in reaching out to staff with your thread, so I can report my own machine there to see if it helps. I can confirm, at the very least, that every BIOS update I installed up until 1.28 did not have the fan running on AC power. 1.06 and 1.28 were not unique.

Yes, Lorenzo from Lenovo services answered but has not got back to me yet. Have you tried undervolting back to BIOS 1.28? Maybe the fixes since then are not too necessary?

I hope that Lorenzo or another staff member is able to reply to you soon! I did try a rollback last year with success, but I have since updated to BIOS 1.38. I have updated the BIOS past the point where I can revert and reinstall one as old as 1.28, unfortunately.

Did you see what Lorenzo wrote? We should send the computers to service, it seems like this has to be repaired manually.
