Once you uncheck the option, Is there any disconnect sound when running system update?

This worked for me, thanks!

Although not sure what repercussions this might have on battery life going forward.

Is this workaround for you? Currently we still could not recreate this issue in our lab

Re:X1 Extreme Gen 2 Vantage device disconnect sound

2020-10-14, 16:57 PM

I had this same problem (on a P53).

Of the two of these Intel USB 3.1 devices, I had to disable the power management option (allowing the device to be turned off to save power) for only one of them.  It was the second in the list for me, and is connected to PCI bus 8.  When I right-click on it, it's also the device that has the option available to disable it (if I right-click on the other USB device, I can only update or uninstall the driver...disabling the device is not listed as an option).

Once the power management option was turned off on the second USB 3.1 device, the device chime/flickering, etc. stopped.  If I re-enable that option, it continues happening (until I reboot).

Like everyone else in this thread, this would be triggered by the Lenovo Vantage app running an update scan (even if nothing was updated).  I'm guessing this scan runs occasionally in the background, because this would seemingly happen at random, and I could see a recent log of installed updates that I don't recall doing manually.

The workaround is nice, but obviously there is some event taking place on the machine every ~20 seconds.  I presume that's not ideal, and probably has some other impact on the system.

Is there a way to prevent Lenovo Vantage from automatically running update checks?  I'd rather do this manually, when I'm prepared to do a reboot.

I cannot believe it, Mikexl you are a genius! That worked for my P1 no more disconnect sounds or twitchy device manager after running Vantage or System Update.

  • I don't know why they'd have a power saving feature on the USB ports... does it really save a whole lot at the end of the day?  I personally could care less if I lost some battery life, my machine already has terrible battery life. lol.

Thanks again Mikexl!!

Glad to help. However, credit goes to @havrancek79 earlier in this discussion, for linking to another thread that presented the workaround: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile-Workstations/USB-Hub-Host-Controller-cycling-after-using-Vantage/m-p/5028764?page=1#5119719 Would still be nice to know how to configure Lenovo Vantage so that it only checks for updates when I manually ask it to (not automatically).

Awesome, this helped alot. Thanks!

On my X1 extreme gen 2 I could uncheck energy savings on both USB 3.1

I tried it first on PCI-Bus 8 and it already fixed the enoying sound.

This will save me a ton of restarts! :-)

Maybe you also have a solution for the display not hiting 500 nits on hybrid mode? :-) This would be the last issue I have with this machine...

I'm not sure how to measure nits...but I will say, I won't ever bother getting a touch screen again for a laptop (who wants to cover their screen with fingerprints anyway?).
