Re: X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

2020-01-18, 10:10 AM

I have IR camera.

We could do a matrix with X1 specs of everyone having the problem and extend it to other laptops models, but I think Lenovo's testers already have it.

However, the fact that some strokes are missing, and the most are the FIRST strokes when we touch the keyboard (when the queue is empty), make me thinking it is a keyboard sampling problem or another generic controller's clock problem. An ipothesis could be that some interference makes the clock instable or less "square" as happends when some parassite effects produce distortions on the wave, or, simply it has too much noise added. In this case a re-engineering of the motherboard/internal components/packaging is required.

Whetever the problem is, I really hope that a firmware update can resolve the problem....

@morozsm

The key-combination mis-registering problem shouldn't be the X1E Gen2 problem. Because I also own an X1C bought 4 years ago.

That X1C also has the same key combination misses as X1E but it won't lose keystokes as X1E.

Latest BIOS, the problem with missing keystrokes present in Windows and in Linux when using a built-in keyboard. Everything works just fine on external keyboards.

@shrubbery is totally on the money here. This is such a frustrating topic to read.

There are 2 very very very different keyboards at play.

The people SUPER frustrated have the "old" model. The keys feel different on the old model, they feel a bit stiffer. It loses keys constantly, having this keyboard makes you want to throw the computer on the wall.

The new keyboard is **MUCH** better, in fact the vast majority of people who have this keyboard would not be posting here, the issue is subtle on the new keyboard. Maybe borderline PTSD of having the old keyboard. Sometimes on very rare conditions you may lose a key. But it is so subtle that vast majority of people would not be posting. The thermals *may* have changed on the new keyboard, I have one confirmation that this may be the case and am in the midst of getting a complete replacement to confirm.

IMO Lenovo really messed up here on so many fronts. They should recall the old problem keyboard and apologise. They should respond on this topic and even maybe just close this topic with some sort of official company line.

There is so much confustion in this topic and the people shouting loudest are the people imo have only experienced the old broken keyboard.

Thinkpad x1 Extreme Gen 2 owner here. Received the laptop Oct 2019.

The keyboard feels awful and it's driving me insane. The missing letter issue defined above happens often. Additionally, every key press feels very slightly delayed causing an uncomfortable experience. I was originally running Windows and am now running Ubuntu. Issue is present in both.

I will admit though this is my first experience with a Thinkpad. Is it normal for the keyboard to feel this way? When connecting an external keyboard it feels great.

If this doesn't get resolved I'm planning on cutting my losses and selling the laptop unless Lenovo is willing to give me a refund. I got it for work (which involves heavy typing) and I can barely use it.

No it's not normal for a thinkpad keyboard to feel like this in general (it is used to be one of the strongest feature). Behind X1 extreme, I have also the cheapest thinkpad (e495) and its keyboard feels great and responsive.

The new keyboard is **MUCH** better

That's not the case for me.

I bought the laptop in September, got the keyboard replaced in October and got a replacement device in December.

All three skipped keys and while I cannot quite say whether the last one skips fewer keys, it's still enough to drive me crazy during programming (especially with modal editors like vim).

However, after quite some time with the devices, I'm fairly confident that I'm seeing significantly more skipped keys on battery.

I start to really regret buying this machine. I should have just bought the Macbook Pro again.

I can see another example of a user not complaining with the "DOLBY ATMOS" branded keyboard. Did any of your keyboards "feel" any different, did any of them have this branding at the bottom left?

Yes, the one I sent back which had a different feel and worse behavior had the "Dolby Atmos" logo on it, same as the new one I kept. They were identical in look, only had a different feel.
