Re: X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

Hi Guys,

I tried to type carefully and slowly. If I really do this, it seems I won't lose any character typed.

However, if sometimes my mind was not focusing enough on typing, even I typed slowly, I still lose some keys randomly.

Is it possible that the X1E and P1 keyboards are too bouncy, sometimes if you don't press hard enough, and the key on the keyboard does not touch the circuit / PCB below it, so the key will look like lost?

You can try like this, close your eyes, press any key that is not in the standard finger position (i.e., not the asdfjkl, e.g., press the letter h) softly (I mean really softly, use as little strength as possible), when you finger feels that they key is down, then release it immediately. The key will be lost 5 out of 10 times for me.

What do you think? Is it possible that this is the reason?

If I try, I can easily get the keyboard to only go a half press and not get a letter to come out. It's not too hard. But I am also getting to the poin where I am typing VERY hard now and still seeing missed presses like enters...so I don't know.

Edit: I was typing and the h key didn't fire. I KNOW I hit the key fully. I'm absolutely hitting these keys hard enough.

Is there a way to flash old BIOS onto the laptop? See if an older version works better?

Hi RampantAndroid, I am not sure too. But apparently X1E's keyboard is much more bouncies than my previous X1C's keyboard.

Without reading this post, I'd thought that it was my problem because my figures were getting used to X1C's keyboard.

Whatever the reason is, this keyboard is losing presses much more than other keyboards, which is not good.

I also notice that for some keys on the keyboard, you must press at the center (and with some strength, for example, the letter h), if you pressed at the corner, it will more likely to be lost even you press hard.

Re: X1 Extreme Gen 2 missing keystrokes

I just tested the bios.

First the result:

The problem is still there, some keys are lost.

However, it seems that the F2, F3 etc keys are ok.

I hope someone else can test again to confirm this.

My testing method, in bios, when you press down any key there will be a sound.

So I will just keep typing three keys (e.g., asd), the first two keys using two fingers of left hand, the last key using another finger of right hand.

If everything goes right, I will hear three sounds each time I typed them. If a key is lost, I will hear two sounds only.

I'll try this tonight.

On the keys being hit - yes, I can make it miss keys if I hit corners just right, but for example in typing this I hit the 'f' key dead center and with forced and...dropped. It isn't consisent.

I wish I'd returned this laptop while I still could have. No new laptop should have this going on.

I was also able to reproduce this problem in bios. I would type out sentences listening for the beep. I was able to get multiple missed keys.

Jwes, can we please get confirmation that someone at Lenovo is looking into this? We are all under warranty, and this problem is making my laptop unusable.

More info:

I think the keys having the most trouble for me are: t, h, b and the enter key. I don't know if that helps any.

I've got this problem.

I've found that if I drag my finger along a row, I can observe missed keys...even while pressing hard. Speed seems to play a factor in this. Example:

Slowly moving:   qwertyuiop[]\

Quickly moving: qwetu[\

Next row down:

Slow: asdfghjkl;'

fast:   asdj'

I hear no beeps when I do this. I've had someone else try this on their own HP laptop just for comparison's sake and it worked fine, fast or slow. That would seem to me like it's an issue of the firmware not performing correctly and dropping key presses - hence it skipping from d to j, and skipping again to '.

Unfortunately my X1 Extreme Gen 2 has the exact same issue, that is how I found this forum. This is my 15th or even 20th laptop (my 3rd ThinkPad) and I never had an issue like this before. No issues on an external keyboard, but when I type on the built-in one some letters are not registered. Note, this is not happening all the time, sometimes minutes of typing go by and every single character is registered. Then, all of a sudden a letter is missed and I am certain I pressed it all the way down. I will go into the BIOS and see if I can reproduce the error by typing random letters and watching out for a (missing) sound.
